It looks pretty fucked up. How long can a movie be when the whole premise is about some sick fucker wanting to do that shit to people? That's why I never really got into horror movies... they always seem to drag on.

In all seriousness, the movie itself is pretty bad. It's not really very dark or disturbing, though...the trailer makes it seem a lot more "serious" than it actually is.

The plot is about (obviously) a mad doctor who wants to sew people into a human centipede, and he succeeds, after which the movie mainly focuses on the "human centipede" parading around for "herr doktor's" amusement. The acting is horrible, but the doctor issues a few choice lines throughout the film ("YES! Feeed her! Eat it, *****!") that were chuckle-worthy...maybe I just have a really warped sense of humor, though.

With that being said, I'd rather watch stupid indie-horror like The Human Centipede than one of the many glossy dreck remakes that are regularly churned out for mass consumption.

A film only deserves to act that serious if it's making any kind of point, which it doesn't seem to be. And they seem to be cashing in a bit of a cultural stereotype - Mengele much?

To quote Ibsen, 'Zola goes into the sewer to bathe in it; I to cleanse it.' So if Zola was bathing in the sewer, then what? The director was having a hot-tub party in there?

If only!

It could've been a lot sleazier than it was. :(

I love how one of the selling points of the film is that it's "100% medically acurate".

Is there not a sequal planned where the only major plot change is that the centipede has about 7 people?

I do not intend to watch it. :p

I'd watch it. Not sure what compels me to watching bad horror movies, but I would.

Everyone has been talking about this movie so much. I'll probably end up seeing it.

The human centipede looks like anilingus group sex.

It is...kind of. Well, at least for the middle and back segments. The lead segment is a Japanese dude who yells incessantly in Japanese at "herr doktor".

I have to see this.

I'll make sure to make it a first-date movie.

Be sure to say that someone on a communist message board told you about it. She'll think that you have exotic tastes in both film AND politics.

Ugh, I love horror films, but torture-porn are not horror movies imo: they are misanthropy and misogyny on celluloid.

What kind of horror movie antagonist isn't misanthropic?

What kind of horror movie antagonist isn't misanthropic?I meant the movie's outlook, not the character's outlook. I don't like the Saw series either, but at least examining misanthropy was the whole point (i.e. fucking with people to "prove" how selfish they are or not). But what's the point of Hostile or most of the others in this genre? To argue that people in backwoods areas and the 3rd world are brutal and these areas are dangerous for rich American tourists?

It's the same thing with the original slashers - the ones in the 70s were more about social fears due to Vietnam and the unrest of that period - we weren't supposed to identify with the Texas cannibals or Leatherface, we were supposed to identify with the hippies. By the 80s the slashers were semi-comic anti-heroes that the audience was supposed to root for as they offed stupid annoying characters one by one. After Jaime Lee Curtis can anyone remember any protagonist from a slasher?

Well, I'm going to have to point out that the term "torture porn" was created by film critics as a pejorative to dismiss films off hand. It's kind of derogatory towards people who like horror films...no one watches these films to "get off", as the term implies...there's nothing "titilating" about horror as a genre (at least not usually). Is Die Hard "action porn"? Is Amelie "romance porn"? Then why should horror be "torture porn"?

The only thing that should be considered torture porn is S&M pornography.

In any case, I kind of like the nihilism, filth and grime of horror. It's contrary to a lot of my political beliefs, but I don't really care...and personally I find a lot of the values expressed in other genres such as romantic comedy and war films to be just as offensive, if not moreso. Is it misanthropic? Yeah, probably. Is it misogynistic? Well, probably not, actually, as horror films often feature female protagonists and heroes (the "last girl" phenomenon and such). Films like the Hostel series are just Eli Roth's fanboy tribute to the golden age of exploitation (hence the inclusion of people like Ruggero Deodato and Edwige Fenech in Hostel 2, which I thought was a huge improvement over the poor first film). The only film that I found genuinely annoying and a little offensive from a left-wing perspective was Eden Lake (2008).

Well, taste is subjective and so I guess for me the main thing is that I'm not scared by most slashers or "torture porn". The only one of the last wave of so-called torture porn that I liked was "Wolf Creek" because the non-linear device actually made me feel more on edge and I actually cared about the safety of the characters who were set up better than in most horror films in general let alone in this sub-genre. Also "Hard Candy" was interesting but I wasn't that scared. Most of the others made me feel bored because I just wanted to get it over with: someone get's tortured; what kind of weird manner will it happen; oh screaming and fake blood - rinse repeat 2 or three more times until the 3rd act. So the preview for this movie seems to have only 2 draws: a possibly good performance/awesome mad scientist character which could be fun and an elaborate mutilation of people's bodies - the man gets to talk/scream but the ladies get to be mutilated AND topless! So yeah, I'm not scared by most of this sub-genre but the uncritical misogyny and misanthropy of a lot movies in this category gets to me too.

I guess it is sort of a double standard on my part - I'm a horror fan so when there are things I don't like I get more angry about it than I would by seeing an ad for yet another misogynist teen sex comedy about "bros trying to get laid". There are so many things to be scared of in our society - so many social fears to be taken up in horror and yet most of the time the writers play on xenophobia above all other fears: the backwoods people will get you, the outsider will get you, deviating from christian morals will cause you to get got, being a black janitor will cause you to die before the audience ever even gets to see the monster.

But like I said, it's subjective - I've been scared senseless by things my friends thought were dumb and hokey. For some reason ghost stories scare the shit out of me and so even though I thought the Grudge versions (US and Japan) were stupid I peed my shorts a little anyway (and continue to do so when ever I hear an old person slowly clear their throat "G-e-r-r-r-r-a-a-h-r-r" or see a pale Japaneese woman crawl head first down the stairs on her hands in real life...hey, it happens). And if I ever saw two little British twins inviting me to stay in their Colorado hotel forever and ever and ever... well let's just say blood would not be the bodily fluid gushing out of the elevator like a torrent when the doors opened.

Wouldn't the scary doctor dude need people of the same height (or atleast in descending order) for his "blueprint" of the caterpillar to work?
Also does he get it past the 3 people, or does the movie end with just a 3 person caterpillar?

I think there's supposed to be a sequel where he wants to make it like 10 people or something ridiculous

That would be kind of difficult, seeing as what happens to him in the end of the film...

But yeah, it is called Human Centipede: First Segment. So they may have some more human centipedes in the immeninent future.
