I wish everyone here in the U.S. knew about oliver north. Some people do and actually support what he did, because Americans are so (blindly) conditioned against any kind of socialism. Wasn't there a connection between that and the drug war?

If you mean "did the US facilitate drug trafficing in order to create a steady source of funding for the Contras in its bid to install a government in Nicaragua that would be amenable to reintigration into the American imperialist bloc", then yes.

Oliver North is quite well known in America. He just isn't the topic of much news since his controversy was under the Reagan administration. He ran for US Senate in Virginia in the 1990s (and there's an interesting documentary about it called "The Perfect Candidate").

Why would it surprise anyone that Fox News would give him a voice, they've long gone off the deep end.

I once watched his show on Fox News. It is highly fucked up. It's called "War Stories with Oliver North." In the episode I saw he defended the Bay of Pigs invasion and spent the whole show praising the Cuban counterrevolutionaries as heroes.

Oliver North puzzled me. After all the mess he got in with the Contra affair and having to take the bullet for that one while the rest of the Reagan Administration could save face, he's still able to go on with big things, recently getting onto Fox where he brainwashes people. I mean with the gravity of that mess around Contra, I'm amazed that America has forgotten it so quickly.

As more and more time passes he can rely on people to forget about Contra and just see him as a good old soldier, fighting for 'murica.

Well shit, G. Gordon Liddy does conservative talk radio and is even a corporate sponsor for gold brokers.

This may be dumb to question, but how involved with the Iran-Contra thing was he? Was he fully involved? or was he like a William Calley, of My Lai infamy, for that, where he was involved but he wasn't as involved or alone as he was charged to be?

Yeah, it seems to be a special project on the right - fox news in particular - to revive disgraced right-wing politicians and make them into heroes of some kind.

I mean the right-wing got Dan Rather fired for reporting a story that turned out not to be true (unfortunately they didn't go after anyone who reported false pro-war BS pumped out by the government which also turned out not to be true... but that would be the entire print and television media) while they have Ollie North and G. Gordon Libby on their payroll. They went on a crusade against ACORN and then manufactured a scandal that was mostly exaggerated and led to the organization dissolving but then when the person who helped manufacture the ACORN scandal got caught breaking into a congressional politician's office... well that's a non-scandal to them. In fact I bet that yuppie turd will get his own Fox show when he gets paroled.

It's a political game for them - it's an attempt to make crimes motivated by right-wing ideology respectable in the mainstream. But it's fucking ironic and disgusting that the same politicians and media figures who demonize ever con who was put away on trumped up 3-strikes laws for selling drugs when he was 19 and "irredeemable" while corporate crooks and military criminals and political sleaze are presented as if they got a bum deal for being caught embezzling, ripping people off, organizing illegal political actions at home and in other countries.

That shit is enough to make me want to put my fist through the wall. Not saying that ACORN was the best organization in the world, but they did help some of the poorest people in this country out, the people who normally get completely ignored and stepped on, and then this fucker O'Keefe comes along, this fucking lace-curtain, prep-school shithead comes along and manufactures a scandal that destroys it, him, who's probably never known a day of privation in his entire god-damn life.

I still remember watching him on Fox News talking about the whole thing, wearing his shades, pimp hat and holding his cane, acting all smug. You know, I generally don't approve of unnecessary violence, but the whole thing is enough to make me want to go Red Army on his skinny ass.

And it's exactly like you said, man. They get some 19 year old working class kid selling pot, and he's going to jail for a long ass time - and God help him if he's black. Good luck to him ever getting a good job or a loan ever again. But people like this schmuck O'Keefe? Forget it.

Yeah I'm still really pissed about the whole elitist and racist attack on ACORN even though, like you, I'm no ACORN booster. Aghh - the smugness, dishonesty, and casual frat-boy racism of O'Keefe really makes him one of the most disgusting conservatives around in my book.

I like to daydream about poetic justice for people like this: I hope he ends up homeless.

Two words; Gordon Liddy. Explains the American political amnesia. Also, Chuck Colson, Fallwell, etc.

Edit: already mentioned...

I usually don't believe the we can just build "alternate forms" of apparatuses to fight capitalism (e.g. lifestyles) but alternative media is quite important. Granted, we should still try to make breakthroughs in the "mainstream corporate" media as well, but shit like Fox can just be overwhelmingly frustrating sometimes.

North was the Operations Officer and he was basically in command of carrying out plans to divert funds to fund the contras and waging war against the Sandinistas and supporting the contras

Yeah great guy. Not surprised Fox would give a criminal like Oliver North a job.
