So, there are strong orthodox nationalist groups in Georgia, which protested the sell of the Erekle Deisadze's book "Saidumlo Siroba" which includes anti-orthodox passages.
Then small group of citizens made a demonstration with slogans "No Fascism" and "Freedom of expression" .. This orthodox nationalist group "Orthodox Parents Unite" broke this citizens rally by fight. Police did nothing.
Tomorrow there'll be another meeting of citizens to protest the fascist aggression and this orthodox group is too going to be there.
Goverment (police) does nothing, because there is a election on May 31 and most of people in Georgia is orthodox christians and goverment doesn't want to lose the votes.
and time by time these nationalist speeches rise, looks like "no food, no sugar, no water for liberals (they call 'liberals' everyone who is against them) " , "We will push you" and etc.
People who is against fascism are in danger, because anytime is possible to beat them not only by these fascist movements members, but by ordinary people too.
sorry for my English

Good luck resisting these idiots. I can sympathize, these guys sound like the religious right in the United States.

Yes, I'm from Georgia.
So, there was the discussion between these fascists and anti-fascist on TV station. then antifascist left the studio, it was protest. so this fascists beat the journalists saying thet they provoked this situation.
it is good that 7-8 activists of fascist movement are in prison by now. and the leader of "Orthodox Unite" escaped from Tbilisi (capital of Georgia) into Tskhinvali (small town in Georgia, which is the reason of war between Russia and Georgia August 2008, by now this territory is not controlled by Georgian Goverment).. so this leader says he'll be back.
Now situation is the quiet. but anyway fascism and discrimination stays the main problem of Georgian society.
So, as you know Georgia was the part of USSR and here the leftist theories are strongly disliked.
There is no even one leftis movement, not saying a word about party.. (These anti-fascist persons are mainly journalists and students.. very small part of whole society)..
may be I hyperbolize but it's still dangerous to walk in the street with the Book I mentioned for example..
This book "Saidumlo Siroba" (in English "Saidumlo Seroba" = "Last Supper" , "Saidumlo Siroba" = Secret Bullshit" so it's associates this sequence from Bible)..
the society is very very conservative here, based on Orthodox Church mainly influenced by Russian Orthodox Church.
thanks

It makes me sad that the land of the great Stalin has degenerated into this. No wonder I never found communist songs in Georgian...

Yes I always find it ironic that the most anti-socialist countries of the former Soviet Union are Georgia and Ukraine, birthplaces of Stalin and Khrushchev respectively.

it's a very very hard question. well, here among very few leftist you can find no Stalinist, everyone (I know 5-6 person in Georgia who is well-known or something like that) are mainly Trotskyists. Why? it's really complicated question and indeed it has reasons why it is how it is.
Anyway, as I saw, I'm 21 years old, Georgians never been leftist even during USSR.. It's just beurocracy and etc.etc.etc.
When the USSR broke out , the ideology dissappeared with it, doesn't matter this ideology was liked by people or not, It was the living stile , how can I say...
So after USSR fall, there was needed a new ideology, so, they, our parents changed from communists (atheists) into Orthodox Chrisitans in one day.
So by now here close to 90% of whole society is not aggresive but strongly orthodoxs..
Here's the society of Spectacles, with it's rituals.
You know, u feel saved when u'are orthodox and everybody knows it. You make cross gestures when pass by churches, you had the cross sticker on your car, so everyone knows you're orthodox.
mainly youngs.
So there is the raising neo-capitalism, consumerism and at the other hand church and it's ideology.
Church monopolize everything, even the private relationships between lovers etcetera.
so, there are the problems one can not solve. some people says, let's go, do something, but "we don't move".

So all old customs returned after the fall...I knew this happened, but I didn't know it was as sad as you described, as in you live in the capital of Georgia and even there the Orthodox Church rules.
I thought maybe there were some areas, or some older folks still like the communist era but looks like this is disappearing, and to make things worse the Georgian government loves the west and U.S. imperialism. I feel for you, man.
