During this period he, along with his fellow Theater Group members, was also active in Socialist/Communist movement (which curiously went unnoticed during the Red Scare).

Despite Ray's leftist views and previous association with the Communist Party, his friendship with Hughes benefited Ray for the better during the Red Scare, and Ray remained untouched

I never knew of this at all. Really happy to find this out, he is definitely one of my favourite directors. I always thought Bigger Than Life was a criticism of bourgeois values. Johnny Guitar is also a very important film, one of the most original westerns. With a feminist slant aswell.

Johnny Guitar has also been interpreted as implicitly anti-McCarthy, and the out law band has been described (positively) as anarchist.

I like Johnny Guitar, I saw alot of westerns to warm up for when I would get Red Dead Redemption and Johnny Guitar was one that jumped out.

Have you seen any Sergio Leone? I don't care much for the Clint Eastwood films but I really liked Once Upon a Time in the West. It's completely over the top, a pure opera of a western, but I think it works.

Saw all his westerns. I liked The Good, The Bad and The Ugly best.
