Bethlehem - Ma'an -
Police are investigating an attack on the home of an American rabbi who has expressed sympathy with Palestinians.

Police officials said vandals glued posters making pro-Israel statements to a fence at the northern California home of Rabbi Michael Lerner, who runs the progressive Jewish publication Tikkun, early Tuesday morning. The posters demonized Lerner and others who have expressed sympathy with the Palestinian struggle, Tikkun said in a statement Tuesday.

Berkeley police communications officer Jamie Perkins told Ma'an that one of the posters depicted Lerner with a South African judge, apparently Richard Goldstone, the author of the UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict that accused Israeli forces and armed groups in Gaza of having committed war crimes during Israel's Cast Lead operation that began in late 2008. Tikkun recently honored the judge with an award.

Police were not investigating the incident as a hate crime, Perkins said over the phone. The vandalism was political in nature, she noted, pointing out that it did not target Lerner as a rabbi or Jew. Still, police have increased their presence in Lerner's neighborhood, Perkins said. "We take these kinds of cases very seriously, and will follow up on any leads that present themselves," she added.
