This attempted bombing (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/05/nyregion/05bomb.html?pagewanted=2&hp) seems quite unlike most religious terrorism though

Usually it seems like the bombers in religious terrorism choose to kill themselves with the blast, being judged by god rather than man. This combined with the random white dude which they originally declared the suspect in this crime adds to the strangeness of the situation.

They didn't declare the odd acting fellow the main suspect- just a man of interest.

They got to this guy by other means. They were scanning over a lot of surveillance, and maybe the leaked out the other information to possibly make the other suspect lower his guard.
