Wikipedia does not saye tone was a socialist, yet this quote sounds more socialist than that of connolly.

"our independence must be had at all hazards, if the men of property will not support us they must fall."

"we can support ourself by the aid of that numerous and resp+ectable class of the community, the men of no property"

If ever a prodestant irishman was socialist, he was, right?

My fenian msn friend says he was not, but he is an anarchist so i dont know if that has anything to do with it.

First one to prove either way gets some rep point

No. A little too early for that.

He was a Jacobin. Which is important, because Jacobinism is a prereq for socialism.

Not completely Irish, but my heritage is Irish, so I'd agree with this. I think if time went by, & he was still around, I'm sure he would've amounted to Socialism. But for now, Jacobinism is the best way of describing him.

I love that quote, have some rep.

My favorite Connolly one,
If you remove the English army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.January, 1897

Tone wasn't a socialist - at best he could be described as a Jacobin - he wasn't the most radical of the United Irish leaders by quite a distance - Henry Joy McCracken was further to the left and was a major advocate of social reform with his activist sister Mary Ann McCracken.

No, not even close. People have made much of the comment about relying on "the men of no property" but that actually included capitalists and the middle class. Men of no property = everyone except the gentry.

Tone would've been very much a progressive capitalist- progressive because of his historical position in opposition to the landed aristocrats and his goal in creating a non-sectarian democratic republic.

Now Robert Emmet's rebellion of 1803 was a small step towards something like left republicanism- he relied on urban workers. It was also the basic model for the Easter Rising.
