The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine saluted the workers of Palestine, the Arab nation, and the world on International Workers' Day, May 1, 2010, emphasizing that Palestinian workers lead our national struggle and ensure our victory, for national liberation, democracy and social justice. The Front's statement emphasized that the workers of Palestine have always been the spearhead of our national liberation movement since the beginning of the colonization and attack on our homeland, and that today, more than ever, workers' unity and trade union democracy is necessary to confront the occupation and its blockades, impoverishment, destruction and unemployment, as well as to lead the national struggle.
The Front presented in its statement its greetings and admiration to the martyrs of the Palestinian labor movement, and the martyrs and prisoners of the Palestinian popular classes, paying tribute as well to all who contributed to the development of the labor movement in Palestine since the beginning of the last century.
In its statement, the Front noted that May Day is a day that reminds us all of the sacrifices of our workers in the struggle for national liberation, noting that Palestinian workers bear the brunt of the consequences of national steadfastness and battle against both Zionist national oppression but also Palestinian class exploitation.
The Front emphasized that the current situation of workers in Palestine, and a review of our past experience and the lessons learned, requires reorganizing the ranks of Palestinian trade unions on the basis that Palestinian workes are the decision-makers in their cause. This requires a unified, coherent, democratic, elected leadership and an end to bureaucratic attitudes that undermine the role and interest of Palestinian workers.
The Front called attention to the workers struggling under siege in Gaza, facing a deliberate economic attack by the occupier and its regional and international partners. It emphasized the need for national and unified Palestinian programs to provide worker-led alternatives to reliance on the occupation and international donors, in order to support the steadfastness of the popular classes in confronting occupation.
The PFLP statement demanded an end to corruption and tax evasion by Palestinian wealthy interests, demanding that the owners of major companies and directing that banks operating in Palestine invest in the national economy and not smuggle their money into foreign investments. The statement emphasized that the workers must not bear alone the burden of the national struggle.
The Front concluded its statement emphasizing the need for workers' organization in the national movement, calling for an end to all delays in democratizing and rebuilding the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions.
