View Full Version : Can I find Native American chants/songs/music that is not distorted by techno beats?

After reading this essay by Kenneth Rexroth (http://www.ubu.com/ethno/discourses/rexroth_indian.html) on American Indian song, I am inclined to "broaden my horizons" in regards to this underexplored art form. However, in searching for samples of Native American chant and song, all I've been able to find is this New Agey, spacey stuff with distortion and synthesizers to boot. I'm familiar with the Smithsonian Folkways collection, but I am wondering if there isn't a more readily available repository (free) where I could access some Native music, eg. the Internet Archive or Wikipedia. Any suggestions?

You might try an AM commercial station out of Flagstaff (KNVN, I think). Lots of Navajo programming including, at least in the past, tribal music.
