Have their ever been any speculative reports about what Cuba would look like without the embargo? Just how much can be blamed on the embargo and how much of Cuba's problems are bureaucratic (or due to central planning)?

Cuba is not that bad off economically compared to the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean despite the embargo.

Oh I know it's not that bad off. I was just wondering what it would look like if the embargo were lifted.

Do you mean economically? Because I assumed the deficiency in democracy in Cuba was due to the economic blockade and the assault on it by the US.

If the embargo were lifted and Cuba could trade with whomever it wants and on its terms, the economy would improve by leaps and bounds. This would give the government no excuse to open up society, allow more freedom of expression and such, and increase existing worker control. As it is, the Cuban economy is run as if it were at war.

Well the embargo costs the Cuban government Billionaires of dollars annually and does cause a number of shortage of goods produced by US companies.

The U.S. is really the only partner worth trading with. Cuba had always depended on the American market before the revolution. The USSR fulfilled the role somewhat, but now that they're gone and Russia isn't as friendly Cuba has had to develop other strategies to keep the economy floating and people's needs met, one of these being the urban agriculture program.
