I was recently on an Islamic forum and they said that there are creatures (of course invisible) called Al-Jinn that can control a human body and cause them pain and discomfort, along with mental distress. But when I mentioned they are likely to be experiencing Psychosis, I was seen as a moron. To be honest, invisible creatures do seem more reasonable than a neurological explanation. What do you think? :P

Let's not forget that this is a Christian phenomenon, too. There is a guy named Bob Larson that has made an entire career out of exorcising demons in the name of Jesus.

He was engaged in a quite interesting debate with Boyd Rice, who at least is completely open with how anti-social his philosophy is.

What a ****.
Please don't use that word, it's considered offensive by some Americans, and we wouldn't want to upset them now, would we?

I quite enjoyed Larson's "debate" with Glen Benton myself.

That's an old myth indeed and in fact one that probably has its routes well before Islam itself. You can see how these myths would have emerged though. In times gone by there would have been no understanding of what was causing mental illness and though there is clearly evidence that at least some cultures recognised it as a sickness of some kind, it is hardly surprising supernatural explanations were given for it.
Not terribly encouraging to see people still giving credit to it today.
