'No Iran military presence in Venezuela'
Tue, 27 Apr 2010
A senior US general has refuted a recent Pentagon report claiming that Iran has established a military presence in Venezuela.
The commander of the US Southern Command, General Douglas Fraser, said Iran is bolstering its relations with Venezuela but has no military presence in the South American country.
"We see a growing Iranian engagement with Venezuela," AFP quoted Fraser as saying on Tuesday.
Iran has a "diplomatic, commercial presence" but, "I haven't seen any evidence of a military presence," he said.
The US general added that there is no indication that Iran had sent arms to Venezuela.
In addition, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez recently declared that the Pentagon's claim that members of the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps are stationed in his country is "absolutely false."

It would have been a dumb move to purchase weapon from iran anyway, russia is much much more capable to deliver more recent, well made weapon system.

That's... weird. Pretty long way for Iran to send troops. Could this be the Pentagon finding a way to assemble a pretext for action in Venezuela?

if it was the case, then why retract their claim?
I think that, has usual, some coo coo from the chavez opposition seen some iranian guy, and then, they just completly went mad, contacted the us embassador in venezuela, the guy fowarded the info to the army, who made a stupid affirmation.
It wouldnt be surprising, Intel of saddam possession of WMD was a Drunk gambler after all.

Have they? It says a senior US commander refuted the report, it doesn't say the Pentagon retracted it.

That's the pretty obvious conclusion. However it is also clear that not even the U.S military is united in pushing for military action against Venezuela.
And remember, actual military action against Venezuela would require a shitload of political capital for a politician (most likely the president) to push through. Especially considering Venezuela isn't some far away distant land like Iraq or Vietnam. Venezuela is right in the U.S back yard and is very capable of striking back in a way that no American enemy has been able to do in quite some time.
We always have to be on guard for the U.S building pretexts for war. However their going to need a lot more than this if they truly want to do something major against Venezuela.

And this is exactly what Venezuela has done recently lol. I think earlier this year, Venezuela updated a lot of their military equipment with Russian hardware and weapons.

Looks like what Chavez was warning his people about might be coming true. This, along with the U.S. colombian ties. No coincidence. Something's about to happen. We might see a revolution between the Venezuelan proletarians against the U.S.-Colombian imperial forces.

Expect the rational members of the military to try and either leak or refute the pentagon planted stories. The honest military men I've spoken to don't want anything to do with war in either Iran or Venezuela, not necessarily out of any moral reasons, but because they realize what the consequences would be.
