It's flatly false that "we" (ie. people in English-speaking and other Western countries) can't make fun of Islam - or, as Ann Coulter has, call for the invasion and occupation of the entire Middle East, the murder of its leaders, and the conversion of all its people into Christians. One of our predominant political-cultural activities is vicious racist assaults against Muslims, or Sikhs we mistake for Muslims.

In Europe, in fact, a lot of the "ex"-fascists have decided to reinvent themselves as "lovers of Israel" all while reviving their old genocidal antisemitic discourse, but redirected against European Muslims. I mean a lot of them are a few steps away from calling for rounding up Muslims in cattlecars. If someone tried to demand that synagogues be banned they could end up in prison, but banning mosques has become one of Europe's favourite pasttimes.

The resolution which have passed, while I profoundly disagree with them, are totally unenforceable. And while I agree with the substance - we should sure as shit be able to criticize whatever we'd like, including religions - a lot of the people advocating such legislation are totally sincere, and for that matter correct, when they point out that it's in response to the not simply racist, but really dangerous character of a lot of so-called "criticism of Islam".
