I've always been fascinated by the life of Mao. What are some good suggestions of a bioography (or website) to read on the man (not a Western-capitalist hatchet job nor a hagiography)?

Thanks

I'd recommend you asking people like Red Cat, Scarlet, or Comrade Alastair for something like that.

A Reinterpretation is a good suggestion, I would go with that and possibly 'Mao: A Biography' by Ross Terrill, it's thoroughly and unashamedly bourgeois but can be quite objective in parts, the basic idea of the book is that Mao was a genius, his ideas were awesome, but when put into practice, many mistakes were made, whether Mao was at fault for these so-called "mistakes" is generally left up for interpretation by the reader. It's a great read and you can learn a lot from it but only if you approach it correctly and with an open mind. That said the safe option is probably bailey's suggestion.

Also, though not a biography, you can learn a lot about Mao's revolutionary activities such as his command during the Long March period from a fantastic book called 'Red Star Over China'

I remember a book entitled " On the Long March with Chairman Mao ". It is a good account of how Mao led his life during the Long March.

I've heard The Battle For China's Past is really good. I downloaded it a week ago and briefly skimmed through it. Heres the link:

I second that. I'm currently reading Battle For China's Past and it's extremely indepth and informative. Plus, it offers a lot of good arguments to fight off the capitalist hoarde. lol
