I found this forum after a restless night of reading the usual sensationalized news drivel on CNN. I was watching a video about how Elian Gonzalez's house (the very same one that was raided by the feds) has been made into a museum of sorts by one of his family members.

It just makes me sick. Everything from the fact that the U.S. held Elian in part due to public outcry from the anti-Castro Cubans in Florida, all the way down to the fact that the staged media photo of Elian (being pulled from the closet with a gun drawn on him) was used as further propaganda to keep the boy away from his father.

I find it ironic that those same people who didn't hesitate to exploit Elian had the audacity to turn around and point fingers at another country's beliefs and practices.

I'm not saying I know a ton about Castro. I don't. But this situation doesn't necessarily warrant taking a pro- or anti- Castro stance. All I am saying is that in my opinion, it was wrong for the U.S. to hold Elian and hoist him in front of the media as a means of thumbing their noses at Castro.

I think it was a deplorable act, and I'm glad Elian found his way home!

I wonder how Elian is doing today. He's a young adult now if I'm not mistaken.

Welcome :)

It would be awesome if Elian Gonzalez started posting on RevLeft.

It would be. IIRC he's a member of the Communist Youth in Cuba.
