View Full Version : Protesting against companies who hire certain individuals?

An example of what I'm talking about:

We have confirmed that known hate criminal and neo-nazi propagandist Craig Cobb is now working at a call center in downtown Vancouver.

What's even worse, THEY KNEW WHO HE WAS BEFORE THEY HIRED HIM.

For anyone that's unaware of who Cobb is, please check out the following links:

http://www.stopracism.ca/content/craig-cobb-one-peoples-project

We will be meeting on the Vancouver art Gallery Stairs at 11 am, this Saturday (the 24th), then proceeding to the offices of his employer. We intend to show them that condoning racism, and employing hate criminals is NOT ACCEPTABLE, ESPECIALLY IN A POSITION WHICH GIVES THEM ACCESS TO THE PERSONAL INFORMATION OF AREA RESIDENTS.

PLEASE JOIN US IN MAKING OUR VOICES HEARD!

The more the merrier, spread the word brothers & sisters...

Solidarity.

I got into a bit of a debate with the creators of the event (this is on Facebook), and the general argument is as follows:

Me: Well, even bigots need to make a living.

Guy: He's working at a call-center for non-profit charities, soliciting donations, which gives him access to personal information on area residents, including YOU and ME. Everyone needs to make a living, but not everyone is advocating RACIAL GENOCIDE. This scumbag is more than just a "bigot", he openly advocates racial violence. Podblanc is one of the most disgusting sites on the entire internet, just take a look...

Me: So this is more about him working at a call centre, and not him working in general (which is what the event implies)

Guy: The biggest problem is that he's spreading hate propaganda in our country, calling for the murder of minorities and trying to intimidate the activists and reporters that attended the March 21st rally this year. The way I see it, when you run a background check on a prospective employee, and they come back as a known hate criminal with outstanding charges, giving them access to the public's personal information is totally irresponsible, and DOES constitute a legitimate threat to public safety...

Me: I'm not trying to defend this guy, btw, just trying to feel out the rationale here.

How do we know the extent to which his employers knew of his activities? In other words, do they know that he openly calls for violence against minorities? Or do they just know he's a bigot?

I think it's a bit of a fallacy to say that because the employer hired ... See Morehim while knowing he's a racist, the company endorses racism. I am a communist, and I've been hired by several chain stores. Does this mean that they endorse communism?

Another Guy: I WOULD like to know how much the employer does know of his activities. If he knows nothing, maybe a letter should be written to them or even just a phone call before-hand?

But to answer the above... It has nothing to do with thinking the company endorses racism, but accepts it. Even if he doesn't bring his racist views to the table, the guy is a complete and utter scumbag, and people like him should really starve and live out in the gutter, where they belong.

Guy: Cheers to that Steve, we're angry at them for condoning his activity, not promoting it... They have been contacted about the situation already, and they have admitted that they were aware of it before hiring him. Makes it fairly black and white to me... From what I understand, many of their employees have voiced concern as well.

Anyways, I'm not trying to get everyone to say that I'm right or wrong, but rather to ask whether protesting that this guy is working is really something people should be spending their time doing. This Anti-racist group isn't strictly leftist, but are they gonna protest the employment of anyone that is a bigot?
