Maybe it was a joke, or maybe it was serious, like the iranian cleric who said that scantily clad women cause earthquakes.

If it was a joke he should know better, if you're a statesman you need to be more professional than to make a joke of that sort, I can imagine some of my queer friends looking down on this comment.

I'm totally in the tank for Chavez, but I got my doubts about Morales.

He didn't abolish the upper house of the legislature when he put through the 2009 constitution. That's seriously not cool.

Um......maybe this is a case of the media blowing things out of proportion? the article said that he said GMOs cause men to "deviate from their manhood". This is too vague to infer homosexuality and to do so either shows homophobia on the part of the media or an intent to viciously make him look bad.

He could have meant that to mean that men grow breasts, or develop smaller penises...things like that.

I am gay, when I read the title I was like WTF....now I doubt he actually said what the title is saying he said. more evidence is needed, or it's BS.

edit: also, it was in reference to female hormones that he thinks are in food. obviously if the male body were to be overloaded with estrogen a man would start to appear more womanly. so if anything this is a gender thing and has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

Here's what Morales actually said, in Spanish:

"El pollo que comemos está cargado de hormonas femeninas. Por eso, cuando los hombres comen esos pollos, tienen desviaciones en su ser como hombres"

Roughly translated, then, Morales said:

"The chicken we eat is full of female hormones. So when men eat those chickens, they have deviations in their 'being as men'."

Despite the right-wing media shit-storm about Morales attacking homosexuals (after all, why talk about the international climate justice conference that Morales was speaking at, and hosting, when you can smear those crazy lefties?), there is nothing in this to indicate homophobia of any sort.

The phrase "su ser como hombres" means something like "their maleness" or "their manhood". There was no reference to homosexuality, and the only way to find one is to deliberately ignore the context in which it was said in order to manufacture an insinuation (bread and butter for the Morales and Chavez-hating mainstream media).

Morales was referring to the effects that the female hormones, particularly oestrogen, with which chickens (and other animals) are pumped to make them produce more meat have on male bodies - feminine features and gestures, hair loss, decreased sperm count, breast growth, etc.

[Oestrogen is an endocrine-disrupting compound and can cause severe male reproductive dysfunction and oestrogen pollution in waterways has even caused some fish to become intersex.]

And Morales' comment was in the context of the destructive lifestyle that the so-called developed world is leading, destroying not only the environment and the climactic balance, but also the chemical balance and make-up of our very own species.

But hey, let's all pretend that he was being homophobic, and forget that he's actually trying to save the fucking world...

Here's the question... would he be put on the Restricted list if he said that on RevLeft?

No. What he said had nothing to do with sexual orientation. He was talking about the concerns with chicken meat that had been injected with female hormones during its life, having an effect on men's bodies. He was talking about the more serious problem of men growing breasts among other things. This is what people usually are concerned about with the subject of hormones in food. Gay men don't want breasts any more than heterosexual men.

whether the hormone thing is a serious concern is another debate, but this is the real context. Maybe the media just loves a funny story (to fit into their "Weird News" category), or there is a real interest in making Morales look horrible. I think the former is why this story has spread so much, the latter is why this story even exists.

What the hell are you talking about? What revolution gave promises? Do you mean the grassroots movements for peasants and indigenous people and the spectacular electoral victories for the left in Latin America? It's a bit more complex than just a monolithic revolution making promises. Ad what hasn't been kept? A climate change summit and a coca farmer saying that GM foods and lab-rat chicken meat is bad for us, especially for men whose sperm counts have noticeably decreased over the 20th century and get misquoted as saying "homosexuals became gay from eating food".....this constitutes breaking promises.

It's from some stupid blog. If Morales was promoting queer bashing, there'd be a problem. If he's pointing out that environmental toxins cause reproductive problems he's totally right on.

From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation:

Chemical valley

Aamjiwnaang First Nation in Sarnia sounds alarm over toxins

Last Updated April 1, 2008

By Mary Ann Colihan, CBC News (http://www.revleft.com/news/credit.html)

Members of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in Sarnia, Ont., think their reserve, which recorded the lowest rate of live male births in the world (two girls born for every boy) and high rates of death, miscarriage and disease, is beyond the saturation point for exposure to pollutants, and the community is making a public plea for action.

The First Nation held a symposium on the issue, funded in part by Health Canada, from March 25 to 27 in Sarnia. Leading scientists and environmental groups from across North America made presentations at the event, which highlighted the First Nation's concerns about the health of the Aamjiwnaang and their neighbours in an area known as "Chemical Valley."
...

Chemical Valley plants also collectively emitted 16.5 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2005, according to NPRI figures. This represents 21 per cent of the total for Ontario, and more than the entire greenhouse gas emissions of British Columbia.

More worrisome for the Aamjiwnaang, exposure to toxic pollutants for people in the region is the highest in the province. The report says that 60 per cent of the 5.7 million kilograms of toxic air releases recorded in 2005 were within a five kilometre radius of the reserve. These pollutants are known to cause cancer or are associated with reproductive and developmental disorders among humans.

According to a 2007 report by Ecojustice (http://www.ecojustice.ca/publications/reports/report-exposing-canadas-chemical-valley/) (formerly the Sierra Legal Defence Fund), Exposing Canada's Chemical Valley: An Investigation of Cumulative Air Pollution Emissions in the Sarnia, Ontario Area, some of the area's chemical, petrochemical and power plants pollute more than others.
"We see the same names over and over on the list of Top Five," says Elaine MacDonald, the senior scientist at Ecojustice, which is Canada's largest non-profit environmental law organization. The companies that lead in emissions of carbon dioxide, volatile organic chemicals, hormone disruptors and heavy metals include Imperial Oil, Nova, Shell, Suncor and Cabot, MacDonald says.

Dude, given what context? There is no context, there is no way to know what he meant. I'm not saying Morales is a homophobe, but I definitely think he misspoke here. Certainly, if Obama said this he would have to come out and clarify what he said, and if Bush said it, everybody on here would be screaming about homophobia, or at the very least, gender role tradition.

Firstly Dwyer was not just "an Irish bouncer".
He firstly worked as a security gaurd on the corrib gas field being paid to intimidate and assault working class people protesting against a multi-national company.
There he met some Hunagarian war criminals wanted for ethnic cleansing and the likes in the Balkans.
These lunatics were Neo-Nazi's ultra nationalists who were all employed by Shell to protect their economic interests.
While befriending these Neo-Nazi's he joined their group and went off to Bolivia, funded by big business interests in Santa Cruz that were disgruntled about their economic apple cart being upset by Morales being elected.
Their they attempted to instigate a civil war along ethnic lines that would result in Santa Cruz separating and which incidentally had the vast majority of economic wealth of Bolivia.
This group of mercenary facists however were caught and executed by the Bolivian Police and on this I would like to congradulate them.
A few less Neo-Nazi war criminals and facists with some delusional Irishman who wanted to go and play facist terrorist for a while.

Whether he misspoke or not, the quote is being sent across the airwaves to ridicule not only Morales but his movement and the other Latin American movements against imperialism.

Of course though the President of the US can still drop bombs on people, negotiate structural adjustment programs to benefit national corporations, and put an embargo on nations that cost them billions a year. But as long as the Prez doesn't say something stupid like this (oh wait, Bush has said plenty of stupid stuff) then the US is still the greatest nation on earth and it's imperial philosophy of global capitalism is still the "best option for humanity".

God, getting all riled up over quotes and misquotes is so distracting from the major issues. Chavez and Morales make laughing stocks of themselves for stuff they do say and stuff they never said (misquotes from the media). Yet, it all goes back to their movements and socialism in general.

What does it mean to deviate from being a man? And why is that necessarily a bad thing? What defines somebody as being a man? Are we talking about genetically (maybe he was?) or are we talking about gender roles (maybe he was?). If he meant genetically then there is nothing "wrong" with what he said, but we don't know what he meant.

Deviating from "man-ness" (not manliness per se, but one's "man-ness", whatever that is) is what he said. I can't change the title of the thread, don't skirt the issue.

When somebody says "act like a man" that is reinforcing gender role tradition, which I think we need to break down, not adhere to/encourage. Which is how I am interpretting Morales' comment.

I've heard that hormone supplements in food animals is responsible for this, that and the other thing, but I've seen little in the way of evidence.

And when one thinks about it, it doesn't make sense. Animals produce hormones anyway, and there's no reason to believe that hormone supplements aren't metabolised like most other organic chemicals. Hormones are produced on an "as-needed" basis by an organism's cells, which suggests to me that they are not chemically stable, and would break down anyway even in the absence of metabolisation. Hormones are also carried in the blood which is drained before being further processed if it is to be consumed.

Indeed it is. The article in the OP is from a right-wing blog that routinely churns out lies against the socialist process in Venezuela and Bolivia(nice to know where some people on Revleft are being fed their news).

And your right, its perfectly akin to selling a product. The bourgeois media circulates stories like this because brand capitalism doesn't sell too well these days, and certain so-called leftists criculate the same crap because no one is buying their utopian swill and therefore instead of arguing convincingly for their own cause they have to throw feces at existing socialist leaders and movements like chimpanzees.

1. Perfectly aware of that fact, it's called being lazy.
2. It was what? A year or two ago? I could be wrong about the source as well.
Either you have evidence for your claims or they can be dismissed as irrelevant.

3. Links for your statement that the bouncer was a neo-Nazi fascist and that he was there to instigate a civil war in Bolivia..
Heres an article dealing with his conections to the "Szekler Legion", a known far right nationalist organisation.
It also deals with Rozsa Flores's connections to Santa Cruz.

Heres this "bouncer" at work assaulting and intimidating working class people in Ireland protesting against a multi-national corporation.

This article is even better in its detailing of the Neo-Nazi origins of Rozsa Flores and his Facist Comrades which was notoriously anti-semitic, was wanted for ethnic cleansing when he was in the notorious "Zenga" unit.
The very same scumbags that Dwyer was caught with.

I don't see folks trying to burn down the Boston Globe for pushing the "hormones make you gay" theory, which is pretty much accepted in the Western scientific press. This just goes to show the hypocrisy and double standards of Western identity politics.

Normally, the changes take shape at a key point of fetal development, when the male brain is masculinized by sex hormones. The female brain is the default. The brain will stay on the female path as long as it is protected from exposure to hormones. The hormonal theory of homosexuality holds that, just as exposure to circulating sex hormones determines whether a fetus will be male or female, such exposure must also influence sexual orientation.

The cases of children born with disorders of "sexual differentiation" offer insight. William Reiner, a psychiatrist and urologist with the University of Oklahoma, has evaluated more than a hundred of these cases. For decades, the standard medical response to boys born with severely inadequate penises (or none at all) was to castrate the boy and have his parents raise him as a girl. But Reiner has found that nurture - even when it involves surgery soon after birth - cannot trump nature. Of the boys with inadequate penises who were raised as girls, he says, "I haven't found one who is sexually attracted to males." The majority of them have transitioned back to being males and report being attracted to females.

During fetal development, sexual identity is set before the sexual organs are formed, Reiner says. Perhaps it's the same for sexual orientation. In his research, of all the babies with X and Y chromosomes who were raised as girls, the only ones he has found who report having female identities and being attracted to males are those who did not have "receptors" to let the male sex hormones do their masculinizing in the womb.

What does this all mean? "Exposure to male hormones in utero dramatically raises the chances of being sexually attracted to females," Reiner says. "We can infer that the absence of male hormone exposure may have something to do with attraction to males."

I would say that it's true that something he said can be interpreted in a negative way, but we're not inclined to make that negative interpretation. You could be accused of not wanting to see his words in their positive interpretation because you dislike him.

Evo Morales "reaffirms" his respect for sexual freedom

The Government of Bolivia has sent a letter to the Spanish group to "reaffirm" respect for sexual freedom

EFE - La Paz, Bolivia - 26/04/2010 19:55

The Government of Bolivia has sent a letter to the Spanish gay community to "reaffirm" the respect for sexual freedom established in the country's new Constitution, reported presidential spokesman Ivan Canelas.

Canelas told a press conference the letter argues that "under no circumstances" did the country's president, Evo Morales, refer to homosexuals when he referred to transgenics during a speech last week at the opening of the social summit on climate change held in Bolivia.

The letter was sent to Madrid by the Ministry of Justice. "He has responded to an umbrella organisation of Spain that represents lesbians and gays. We respect their sexual freedom and affirm in this respect what is established in the Constitution," Canelas.

"It never entered the President's head, for any reason, to attack the rights of homosexuals," the spokesman said, stressing that Morales was the driver of the new constitution that was enacted more than a year ago and that prohibits and punishes all forms of discrimination on grounds of sex, color, age, or sexual orientation.

The Bolivian Government's letter is a response to the "personal protest" that the secretary of Social Movements of the Federal Executive Committee of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), Pedro Zerolo, presented last week at the Embassy of Bolivia in Madrid after Morales's speech.

In criticising GM food, Morales said that the consumption of poultry fed female hormones causes consequences in men and girls.

"The chicken we eat is full of female hormones, so when men eat these chickens they have deviations in their being like men," said Morales, causing a wave of criticism in his own country and abroad from gay groups accusing him of being homophobic.

Morales also said that "baldness is a disease in Europe, most of them are bald. And that is because of the things they eat."

In the same speech, the Bolivian president blamed premature breast growth in girls' chicken or cattle treated with hormones.

Presidential spokesman today blamed the "misunderstanding" of the Bolivian president's speech on "tremendous speculation," which led to a partial interpretation of the speech.

"You all know that sometimes a speech can be exaggerated or deliberately misinterpreted," Canelas told reporters.

I am gay, when I read the title I was like WTF....now I doubt he actually said what the title is saying he said. more evidence is needed, or it's BS.

edit: also, it was in reference to female hormones that he thinks are in food. obviously if the male body were to be overloaded with estrogen a man would start to appear more womanly. so if anything this is a gender thing and has nothing to do with sexual orientation."deviate from their manhood". Sounds pretty specific to me, he should know better than to make dumb arse remarks like that. What type of beliefs does this man have anyway? Is he an atheist or does he have tribal religous beliefs? I can't help wonder what people's reaction would be if the Pope said what he did.
