View Full Version : News outlets
Mumbles

Hey, I'm figuring this would go under Learning since it's probably a basic question many people have answered before, but here goes.
What are some good news outlets that actually say what the issues are and the options that have been presented that don't get into the bullshit like Obama backs this unknown plan vs the Tea Party who wants you to back this unknown plan, blah, blah, blah.
Or where could I learn about the different issues even through all the biased stuff?
I'm asking because as I've been reading some leftist stuff, I feel like I'm missing what the alternatives are because I want to make my own decisions on this stuff, even if it does turn out to be the same decision the leftists made, I want to make it myself.

For non-party driven media see List of independent left-wing publications (http://eng.anarchopedia.org/list_of_independent_left-wing_publications).
For party driven media see List of Left-wing parties in the US (http://eng.anarchopedia.org/List_of_Left-Wing_Parties_in_the_United_States).
There are of course numerous independent left-wing websites which don't publish print editions too (counterpunch (http://www.counterpunch.org/), common dreams (http://www.commondreams.org/), etc.). Indymedia (http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml) and Wikinews (http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Main_Page) are worth checking out if you don't want mainstream but you do want to break out of the conventional "left".
In fact for in-depth, which I think might be what you are looking for, The Nation (http://www.thenation.com/) would be a good start.

I generally rely on socialist publications for news, party websites and blogs, independent sites, I even check the Morning Star website sometimes. If you're looking for real up-to-the-minute news then I would go with al Jazeera, Press TV, and maybe Russia Today.

This site is a pretty good resource, to be honest. I get a lot of my news on things that aren't covered from here.

Democracy Now!, Monthly Review.
Xinhua.net (PRC) while obviously not as free as others, it does show at least the chinese rationalization behind certain policies and lodges good criticism on the phony freedom fighters (those who want to balkanize china)
BBC News - don't expect deep ideological criticism of the UK state, Northern Ireland policy, or breaking news on Iraq, but good for general headlines. It's how I found out about the Nepalese Maoists. It was fair enough to be interesting and got me reading more, it was around the time that the civil war ended and the monarchy was deposed they had some good articles.
