Well the topic of Irish music has been raised before, but I couldn't see any threads on (in my eyes) the greatest irish singer and the greatest folk singer, Luke Kelly. If you're not aware of him, he was best known as a member of the Dubliners. But he was also a commited Socialist, a member of the Connolly Association when he lived in the uk and an Irish Republican. Although many of the songs he recorded were traditional, he was never shy of criticising the problems with his country, despite his love of his fellow Irish, but also sung songs dealing with the global issuses of socialisim. Unfourtunately he died in 1984 of a brain tumour aged only 43.

Anyways I've put some songs for youse to check out. I'd recomend him to ANYONE who likes folk.

I love ol'e Luke:

I detect lots of revolutionary elements in his music, such as this song about the plight of the mine workers in the infamous Springhill mining disaster in Nova Scotia. My favorite lyrics "bone and blood are the price of coal."

good song about the tragedy of British Imperialism in Ireland. I think this should be an anthem for all oppressed nations:

Another good one. I know its historically inaccurate of me, but this somehow reminds of a communist partisan brigade marching to fight the Nazis (if you take out the British Press-gang part):
