I know I can't be the only one on here to like it. I've never paid attention to groups and performers before, but now I'm wanting to develop a collection and I'd like suggestions, if you have them. I'm not so much concerned that it has a "message" as I am that it's good bluegrass.

Hmmm, I like a lot of stuff by John Hartford; Emmylou's Roses In The Snow album; Old Crow Medicine Show for an updated sound; & the oblique Canadian stylings of the BeGoodTanyas; also, the bluegrass version of Snoop's Gin & Juice by some guys called Rehab is great if you can forgive the casual sexism.

I can't really say I'm a big fan, but I am from the bluegrass state so I hear it all the time. My dad loves it though.

One of my all-time favorite bands are the Flying Burrito Brothers. They were mainly country of the Bakersfield school during their '69-2000 existence, but they delved into a bit of bluegrass as well. Their best bluegrass album is "Last Of The Red Hot Burritos", a live set from '72. New Riders of The Purple Sage, early on, did bluegrass. There's a lot of great bluegrass and festivals.
And New Grass Revival are a must - you've heard of Bela Fleck I'm sure.

Ive been really getting into bluegrass lately, especially newer bluegrass (Trampled by Turtles, Old Crow Medicine Show and the likes). What Ive found really interesting however, is the progressive messages they have. This is based on my relatively small time listening to them, so I could have found the exceptions, but still, a bluegrass version of Union Maid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAzhz29eVec) is awesome. Anyways, I agree with Miles, as long as its a good music, I dont really care wether it has a message or not, but when it does, it makes it even more enjoyable!
While writing, I really have to mention some Swedish bluegrass as well, especially Spinning Jennies, great band, playing socialist and working class music.

I LOVE BLUEGRASS, SONGS OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE!(yas, a devout Metalhead just said this ;))
Not exactly Bluegrass, but obviously some Bluegrass influence in the intro and a great song about a great event in worker's history:

Well, it really depends on what generation of bluegrass you're looking to get into: you've got Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe as central icons of early bluegrass-- a classical combination of acoustic stringed instruments and vocals; I would recommend starting there. You've additionally got more "contemporary" sound in folks like Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, the Yonder Mountain String Band as well as non-traditional groups like the String-Cheese Incident that sometimes play bluegrass as well.
Alabama Public Radio (http://www.apr.org)does a great show every Saturday for two hours in the evening, Bama Bluegrass, (Saturday 7:00-9:00pm) which picks up some really noteworthy players and is an excellent introduction to the style. The host Lance Kinney is probably not the sharpest tack in the room, but he knows his bluegrass and always has a good selection on.

I listen to a lot of music heavily influenced by bluegrass, but unfortunately I'm not all too familiar with the classics.

Personally, not a big fan. Had the stuff shoved down my throat more than once or twice by people I used to jam with.
In any case, I would recommend watching the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" and maybe buying the soundtrack. Has some interesting songs in it.

Depending on where you live, I suggest looking for venues that have "bluegrass night" or something similar. There's nothing like live bluegrass played by a couple of people who do it just for fun.
