I have recently took an interest is Che Guevara, but I have been told by many people that he was a ruthless murderer. What is the truth? Should Che be seen as a great revolutionary, or was he just a ruthless murderer?

Why not both? Revolutionary status and he's got street cred!
~
Really though, no. He was involved in some pretty violent times. Terrible excuse, I know, but I'm very fucking high right now.

If anyone tells you Che was a murderer, tell 'em so was George Washington. Hell, that man actually killed british soldiers in their sleep on Christmas Day... doesn't get much more "ruthless" than that.
Both were fighting a revolution. Why is George Washington a "Hero", and Che a murderer?

Read Jon Lee Anderson's "Che".

Che was a revolutionary. All revolutionaries are violent, calling Che a murderer is not accurate, nor would be calling Washington a murderer either. A sub once told me that he was a murderer, and I almost blew up in his face.

I'll read that book Common Means, thanks!

Hell, I know loads about Che. I'm actually interested in where to get all of the revolutionary battles & killings that George Washington did. Despite what one's view is on America, the American Revolution was a fascinating tale of when the Americans were once seen as terrorists by the British Empire because they chose to fight, die, & kill for the freedom of their people.

Exactly. Had the revolution failed, our founding fathers would've been beheaded and their places in history would be entirely different. They would've been painted as villains. It just goes to show you that history really is written by the victor.

Plus, unlike Washington, Che never owned slaves. Washington owned slaves, Thomas Jefferson owned slaves along with several other Founding Fathers, and yet somehow it's all perfectly acceptable, even laudable, to look at these men with tears in our eyes and our hands on our hearts.

Yes, very true. But it's also been possible that he became against the idea of owning slaves. Reason be why, when his wife died, he had it in his will that they were to be freed. Though, if Washington was to outspokenly talked of such views, he would've been perceived as an enemy to everyone else as well, & Washington couldn't afford such.

Yes, by definition he was a murderer, revolution isn't a dinner party.

That makes some sense. I wouldn't really want to speculate, because the American Revolution is really not my thing, nor even that whole era. Mostly though, my intention is not so much to villify Washington, but to point out that certain historical figures get a pass for their crimes and their sins, while others do not. SOME historical figures get the luxury of being complicated human beings, and others do not.

If I were to try and tell Glenn Beck everything I've ever thought people should tell him, my tongue would burst into flames. ;)
