I'm new at the whole posting here thing, so I apologize if there has been a thread like this already.

As I was studying for my poli-sci exam yesterday, I came across a question about the challenges in an advanced liberal democracy. One of those challenges mentioned was about the declining replacement rate that seems prevalent today. I realized that this may also apply as a challenge in a communist society.

For replacing the current population, mathematically a woman is supposed to have 2 children, to ensure the continuation of the human race. Of course, with education woman often postpone childbearing, or have 0 - 1 children.

How would this be solved in a communist society? I know that I personally do not want to be part of the reproductive chain, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this thought. So how would this be handled?

I assume the constraints of a capitalist society would no longer apply (expensive childcare, or loss of pay from jobs), so would there be some sort of communal method to child raising? How would a family structure evolve out of this?

Thanks :)

Hopefully we could dissolve the family apparatus and move to a more communal child raising system. However I'm not terribly worried about declining or climbing population rates; if they fall that's fine, or if they rise that's fine too.

I agree with ArrowLance. I mean, I guess I see how it could become problematic, but it's not exactly at the top of my list of things to worry about at the moment. You can't really force people to reproduce, so I don't know... maybe this is where cloning will come in handy.

Seriously though, I think it'll work itself out. In a communist society, it probably won't be much of a problem because people who want to have children won't be held back because of financial struggles anymore.
