TYPE O NEGATIVE singer/frontman Peter Steele has been confirmed dead at the age of 48. The legendary frontman Peter Steele is rumored to have passed away due to heart failure. His passing was first reported by metal blogess Mistress Juliya on the social networking tool Twitter (http://twitter.com/MistressJuliya). The cause of death was apparently confirmed by Kenny Hickey, bassist for the band Peter Steele fronted TYPE O NEGATIVE.

He passed of heart failure today. Just spoke to Kenny.

Today is a very sad day in metal. End of an era. Peter Steele passed today. I loved my friendour idolmy heart is with his band and family

Peter Steele was previously rumored to have died in 2005, when an image of a tombstone was posted to the groups website bearing his name. The announcement turned out to be a hoax. Peter Steele had recently been thought to have overcome his long-standing cocaine and alcohol dependencies.
Peter Steele was born in 1962 and released seven studio albums with TYPE O NEGATIVE between 1991 and 2007.

It's weird because I've been on a massive Type-O binge the past few weeks, I even got hold of their Symphony for the Devil DVD a week back (some great, funny and now sad stuff on there), been longing for a new album or a gig. I've never seen Type-O live, I was seriously hoping on attending any gigs they we're at this year... not possible now, no gigs, no new album, no Pete. It's hard to hold back the tears.

RIP big guy

Oh I know :( I worked with him a few times. And was completely star struck the first time I met him. (which is rare) He was always so kind and accommodating to his fans. Music lost a trail blazer yesterday, gorgeous rock god, inside and out.

Fucking bummed. I wasn't a huge Type O fan, but that guy had one of the best voices in rock history.

That sucks. I wasn't a huge fan of Type O Negative, but they were pretty cool.

They were very talented. The Misfits of heavy metal.

Yeah, I haven't really been a big fan of them for about a decade, but it's definitely a sad day. Type 0 was quite a band in their day.

The weird thing is that I dreamed I went to a Type 0 show last night...

I dreamt I was sitting in Peter Steeles lap. I must be because I have a pic of me in his lap.

Lucky... honestly, the guy used to make me seriously question my sexual orientation, I understand why he wrote 'I like Goils'

I remember buying the newly-released Bloody Kisses on the recommendation of a friend, having never even heard of them before, and playing it endlessly for months afterward. I'd never heard such a flawless combination of styles (and I still haven't). It was mesmerizing (and it still is). I must have listened to Christian Woman 1,000 times by now. Time to make it 1,001....

I hadn't heard of them until one of my mates lent me is Mortal Combat soundtrack in 2003. Blood and Fire [Out of the Ashes Mix], fucking loved it, the best song on the soundtrack. Few weeks later I saw 'I don't wanna be me' on Kerrang!, I just went straight out and got the 'Life is Killing me' album the same day, listened to it for weeks, became my soundtrack to summer (Its still my favourite album). A few months later, I saw the other older Type-O Albums in a store , though 'Fuck it' and got them all

I first heard them in 2003 as well, on the Freddy vs Jason soundtrack, with (We Were)Electrocute. Great song.

Don't know his music. Not a great fan of gothic/doom metal. The media informed me about the fact that radical left antifa groups in the Netherlands achieved a boycot of Type O Negative in the early 90's. On alleged sympathy for nazism by the band.

I digged up some info and its obviously that Peter Steele was clearly a right winged person. His views seem to be a little homophobe and the lyrics of 'der untermensch' leaves very few space left for interpertations. However he was certainly no nazi or a racist. I would say a very conservative right winged musician.

Either way, RIP, it always sucks when you have lost an idol at an early age.

Yeah when he did the pics for Playgirl magazine and found out that mostly gay men read it he got really pissed off and demanded that it never be mentioned again

The apparent homophobia comes from a life of being chased by gay guys... he was very good looking and often got gays hitting on him... I guess after the PlayGirl fiasco he just snapped, that's why he wrote 'I like Goils'.

Lyrics are open to interpenetration, he had a dark, tongue in cheek sense of humour and could come across as sexist, insensitive or racist, but I doubt deep down he actually felt that way, he just liked to provoke/offend people... most of Type O did.... on part of their 'Symphony for the Devil' DVD, one of their roadies (who looks a little like Matt Lucas) goes around shouting 'Kill all the Jews, Kill all the Jews!', despite himself and also Josh Silver, Type O's Keyboardist, being Jewish.

Steele never really declared his political views, at the times he was rumoured to have done so they were all over the place, he said both Hitler and Stalin were idols because 'They got shit done', he wrote 'Der Untermensch' but he also wrote 'Kill all White People' and 'We hate everyone'... he had a fantasy of liberating America and declaring it the 'Peoples Technocratic Republic of Vinland, yet he also said he was a 'Capitalist'.

Basically, anything Steele said that was vaguely political I would recommend that it's taken with a pinch of salt.
