I've seen a few films written to introduce Western audiences to Chinese culture; one was done by Deutsche Welle, a German TV channel, about a year ago--it focused in part on migratory workers living in houseboats along major rivers in some Chinese cities. Now that I think about it, it might have been a PBS docu--I'm not sure, and it doesn't really matter. Do you know of any interesing docu's on modern Chinese culture? Thanks ahead for the info.

The Passion of the Mao (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800157/). An excellent introductory documentary to modern Chinese history by Lee Feigon, author of Mao: A Reinterpretation. Highly recommended.

I would recommend China In Revolution (1911-1949). It is a pretty good look at China before Mao and the PRC. It can be viewed here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRkKKRdiTBc). It's ten parts which are all along the side.

If you can find it, Michaelangelo Antonioni's Chung Kuo - Cina (1972) is worth searching for. There was an English sub-titled version available once. It has a run time of 3 and a half hours.

Just watched this last night. Pretty good actually, aside from the the whole shpiel about Mao having many "mistresses" or whatever. Apparently that rumor was debunked by Mobo Gao in his book "The Battle For China's Past" (which I have yet to read). Aside from that, I'd recommend that as well.
