Looks terribly predictable and uninspired.

I hate how in all these movies, the female warriors have to be "warrior-like" yet "feminine" at the same time.

And the Romans were imperialists to the nth degree.

Basically, it is pretty obvious that ancient Rome is representing America in most Hollywood productions about the Roman Empire.

I cannot really understand why anyone would want to identify with ancient Rome though. It was a brutal, openly imperialist superpower which basically stole its ingenuity from the Greeks, its resources from the Gauls and its religion from various oriental sources.

The only Roman leader which had a sympathetic vision was Nero, wanting to change Rome from an empire of iron and blood into one of arts and music. Surely, he too was bizarre, blood-thirsty, violent and probably slightly disturbed, but at least he tried to make a clean break.
