View Full Version : Buying bumper stickers with a leftist message is freakin' impossible

GPDP

My car's looking kinda bland, so I thought of decorating it with a bumper sticker or two. But no matter how much I search, just about all the socialism-related bumper stickers I can find online are little more than far-right anti-Obama bullshit about his supposed "socialism."

Maybe by searching for more issue-specific stickers (like anti-war or pro-immigrant rights stickers) I might have better luck, but I would really like something more directly anti-capitalist.

you should just get a bumper sticker that says something funny or something unusual. political bumperstickers simply ask for chumps to mess with your car.

Stickers should be placed all over town, on walls and over billboards and such.

buy little hammer and sickle flags and put them on the hood of your car, that would look really badass especially if your car is black and has tinted windows.

I could make comments about a country dominated by potato-eating sheep incapable of independent thought. I have a low tolerance for European elitism. Europe hasn't had meaningful sizes of minorities in centuries and now that it does, it acts no better than America about it.

What's wrong with denim?

There's a lot wrong with wearing pre-worn, half-faded purple-black jeans to an office for example. There's a lot wrong with choosing skinny jeans over comfortable cargoes for many people. There's a lot wrong with paying $100 for a pair of jeans you'll wear for one season

But I think Dr Mindbender was referring to the simple blue denim of poorer and middle-income America (Texans and other hinterland Americans), the tough fabric used for pants and jackets by many white and Chicano farm and ranch workers and the construction workers of America. The thought of it disgusts me too. It's right up there with the lunch pail and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and callouses.

Yeah, I agree. Especially on the skinny jeans issue.

Jeans are pretty much all I wear, though. (Not expensive ones, either...10-20 dollar pairs I buy at big box stores).

Well, I don't know if the OP was looking for commie stuff or what, so this info may not be all that helpful. However, in the 'gear' section of the AK Press website, they have a bunch of stuff. Although, the bulk of it is either directly or quasi-related to anarchism (anarcho-feminist emblem, circle A emblem, anarchist star, anarcho-syndicalist star, etc).

At any rate, for people worried that once they stick an emblem or bumper sticker on their car they mightn't be able to get it off again, I suggest the following. The website I linked to in my last post sells little plastic clips you can put you can attach to your stickers if you're planning on putting them on glass (the rear windshield, for instance). Evolvefish sells magnetic backings which you can use if you plan on putting your stickers on the metal rear end of your car. If you plan on sticking them on your bumper, and your bumper's plastic like so many of them are these days, I guess you're shit out of luck.

Ever been to the United States, Mindbender?

Cuz I've lived in the United States my entire life, have visited every state except Hawaii, and have interacted with untold numbers of people here. So I think I'm fairly qualified to speak on what the political scene is like here. Moreso than, say, someone who's sole knowledge of the U.S. political scene are shots of tea party rallies that he sees on a news broadcast.

Fact of the matter is that those "anti-leftist sheep" who are "incapable of independent thought" are more often than not members of the working class. Y'know, the people we're trying to win over. So you'd better hope that they are in fact capable of independent thought.

That's right, put paddy in his place. AMERICA IS #1!

There's a difference between self-deprecation and hypocrisy. I'm not sure if everyone is aware, but there's a difference between an American moaning about other Americans being Nascar fans or eye-rolling about McDonald's and say an Irisher mocking American workers' clothes or an American mocking Chinese workers' clothes for that matter. I'm not going to be nice about Westerner on Westerner elitism or any elitism. When I hear some dumbass Korean talk about Americans drink too much I mention that my last school's teachers drank on school field trips and that I find more puke outside in my apartment building than I saw in college and that soju-drinking is mandatory at special school lunches and dinners.

I'm not going to listen to Europeans bemoan American intolerance when the Republic of Ireland bans blasphemy or Switzerland bans minarets. Europeans are to America today as the US Northern abolitionists were to Southern slaveholders--many abolitionists were closet racists who never knew blacks or wanted to send them "Back" to Africa. Likewise today, Europe comments on American racism while handling its influx of African and Middle Eastern people with as much "aplomb" as America.

So basically no one can take the piss out of anywhere unless they live there? Maybe I come from a culture that's much more casually insulting to people (or full of beery football hooligans, depending on who you ask) and have a thicker skin on these things but I really don't see the big deal. If you want to self-deprecate properly you've got to let others take the piss too.

You have us bang to rights there and of course Europe is just as bad, if not worse (in places like switzerland) than the US for anti-immigrant feelings. This isn't, however, liscence to not take a bit of joshing on the chin.

Dr Mindbender
24th April 2010, 18:09
big communist party in ulster then?

No, but thats not inherently because the Northern Irish are raving anti-communists. In my experience youre far more likely to have a level headed strawman-free political debate with an Ulster-person than with an American. Granted, our political horizon is dominated by theists who cosy up to the british right due to its synomonous sympathies for the unionist hegemony but generally they dont examine or concern themselves with contemporary politics beyond that. The political spectrum in Ulster is not really analogous to the rest of the western world. Here it isn't so much 'left vs right' as much as 'orange vs green'.
