I was brought up around dogs (Rottwielers, Pitbulls ,staffies, whippets, boxers, american and english bulldogs, wolfhounds and all kinds of sheepdogs amongst others) my parents owned 'em, my family did (some had shit loads, mostly the farming and the traveling sides) and most of my friends did too. I've been without a dog (though I was sharing one to be honest) since I left london.

Untill I'm setled again I'm not getting a dog, much as I miss having one, but even though I don't like the term man's best friend- I've seriously never been any closer to any other animal. Well cept maybe my cousin pony when I was living in Ballymun, but they had lovely dogs too.

So does anyone else own a dog or share my intrest in 'em?

I had a pet as a kid. It was a big, black German Shepherd...really beautiful dog. We got him when I was five, and he died when I was eighteen, so he was part of my life for basically my entire childhood/adolescence. I was pretty bummed when he died. :(

I currently don't own a dog. One of my housemate's does, though, and it's annoying as fuck.

I've owned three dogs. The first was a Golden Retriever we had to give away when we moved to this hellhole. :( The second was a mutt and she got hit by a car when I was a freshman in high school.:crying: And now I own a German Shepard and she is wonderful. :)

I've never had a dog, but I've always wanted one. When I can, I'll probably get a German Shepherd, a doberman or a border collie. The only problem is that they're all pretty much country dogs, and I don't want one of those barking rats

I have always been a bit of a cat person, but I worked in an animal shelter for a while and got really attached to a giant rottweiler a little taller than I was. There is a lot of character in a dog, but they are also really hard to take care of

Er... how tall are you... your unlikely to see a Rottie over 2 1/2 foot?

I like both cats and dogs, but I'm allergic to cats.

I've never owned a dog, but I would want either a Whippet, English Bulldog, Beagle, Basset Hound, or Schnauzer.

i had a Staffie for 14 years as a kid, he died 7 years ago. the "nanny dog" tag is very apt for them. From wikipedia:

Courage is important in a pet dog because more dogs bite out of fear than for any other reason. A dog who is not alarmed can cope much better with the rough and tumble of a busy family home, one of the reasons the Stafford is such a success as a dog for children. He is as hardy and fun-loving, and fearless, as they are.

Sums them up, really.

Yeah, sounds like my experience of them. Same from american pitbulls, I was around them when I was very young, fourtunately my dads dog died before the ban came in so he didn't have to go through the trauma of havin in put down, taken away or the expence of getting a court exemption. Tilly was the calmest dog I've ever known- but then most people probably wouldn't even realise she was pit now. The amount of dogs I see when I'm in London that are so obviously part american pit is hillarous. But yeah I've also been around staffie a lot and they are one of my favourite dogs.

I can see a bit of both in there, though more pit than bulldog, you ever get any hassle off the pigs about him? Could also be some sort of staffie cross? One of my friends was always wary about lettin me walk her pitty but if the police saw her with it they wouldn't bat an eyelid cos shes a pretty, normal lookin girl and the dog is also very lean and to the unwise could pass as staffie?

we used to have an insanly represive anti-pitbull law and that made me quite scarred at times to walk him of the leash (wich was a proof of the insanity of that law because i was anxious and had my dog on the leash he was way more agresive), any dog with pitbull aperiences could be confisquated and put down, but luckily science won the debate over poppulism and classism and the law got scrapped recently.

I wish they'd scrap the law here, its frustrating cos one of my cousins in eire breeds some of the most beautiful and thoroughbred american pitbulls I've ever seen and I can't bring one over to england. I was around these dogs as a baby. Any dog can be dangerous, but I seriously belive it is the bad owners that are the problem, not the dogs. Course its easier to target the dogs, typical british logic...

That cat looks properly evil.

Anyway, I like both cats and dogs, but cats require less looking after and are better adapted to urban areas, whereas dogs require about as much attention as children and are generally loath to cities. NOW what's the class-orientation of pets, huh!

One of my favourite breeds, the English Mastiff:

Also, are Bulldogs/Bostons as hard to take care of (health wise) as I've heard they are?

Yeah, they're not normally very well suited to urban environments (assuming that's where you live), having been originally bred to be livestock guardians in villages. Also, livestock guardian breeds tend to be very independent-minded in nature (since they were bred to be able to work by themselves among the herd with minimal human guidance and direction), which can make it very difficult to teach them to obey human commands and so can make them a handful for the average dog handler. They're unlike a dog like the German Shepherd, for example, which tends to respond very well to almost all types of training.

Anyway, i could talk about dogs all day, the fascinating beasts that they are.

The thing is, I love lots of bigger breeds too, but for my living situation it's much more realistic for me to get something not too active and smaller sized...

I don't mind them being strong, and active. What I mean is that I'm aiming to eventually get a breed that won't act like my friend's Australian shepherd and English Pointer who seem to get agitated even if they spend 15 mins inside. "Not too active" relative to other breeds that demand much higher levels of mental stimulation, I suppose is what I mean.

And as for terriers, I've only had experience hanging out with a couple of Pomeranians that were not trained very well and were really annoying, so that gave me a bad impression.
