Judge Shot to Death in Moscow

MOSCOW — A city court judge who had recently sentenced members of ultranationalist hate groups was shot to death as he left his apartment on Monday morning, police reported.
The judge, Eduard Chuvashov, was shot in the head and chest in what investigators believe to be a contract killing, said Yelena Pervilova, a spokeswoman for Moscow’s Interior Ministry.
Judge Chuvashov last week wrapped up the trial of the so-called Ryno Gang, a group of Moscow teenagers who randomly attacked non-Russian immigrants they spotted on the street. He imposed sentences between 10 and 20 years.
Earlier this year he also sentenced members of a skinhead group called the White Wolves who were convicted of 11 murders. Police officials said group members filmed the murders on their cellphones and uploaded them to nationalist Web sites.
Investigators have said the murder was probably linked to the judge’s professional activities.
