State funding being cut or frozen for HIV/AIDS medications

Today marks 20 years since Ryan White's death. There so much history up until that point, the struggle for funding and how a child's voice is what opened dialog address the pandemic of AIDS. We HAD so many gains, anti-virals, identification of different strains of HIV, and appropriate meds that are effective. And no......w Obama is freezing funds and or cutting them as well as the grant money that bears Ryans name.

There is a sick sort of irony to all this. People living with HIV cant opt into the new health care reform until 2014 and on the other hand, ADAP and Ryan White grant funds are either being cut or frozen NOW. At best, its totally illogical.

That's Utah State Senate President Michael Waddoups, a Republican, in questioning a federal grant for "life and death" HIV drugs in his state. Utah shelved its Ryan White funding (http://hab.hrsa.gov/) at least for the month, leaving some of the state's poorest patients at risk of having no way to pay for their medicine. Under the program, Utah kicks in $2 million and the federal government provides nearly another $4 million. We are fighting a demon much worse than at the outbreak of HIV because at least then we had programs we could tap into like medicaid. They are even cutting those funds at the state level.

All this has caused civil disobedient groups like ACT-UP to be resurrected and fight back. In Louisiana, we have gained a membership so quickly statewide we have planned statewide protests against the Gov, Jindals funding cuts which have inspired other states to follow suit.

I have been asked to write a direct action manual to organize other groups now, before state law makers start voting on these budget cuts and it is too late.

Yours is as plausible as the conspiracy theory i once read that it was deliberately caused by soviet visiting scientists in an effort to eliminate resistance paving the way for a soviet invasion.

Or maybe the disease made the leap from apes to humans, and was somehow imported to western countries via human migration without any sort of conscious or malicious intent behind it not unlike any other outbreak in history. When the black death wiped out half of europe i doubt the european monarchies were sitting thinking, ''fucking excellent, we'll be sorted if theres any harvest shortages''.

Why is that so hard to fathom? I suppose the swine flu outbreak was a population control too?

Well the origins of HIV have been around for decades if not a century, so the kind of blows that whole Capitalist plot for population control or what ever motive.

BUT..... Keeping HIV big pharma is another issue all together. They spend pennies to make an anti-viral pill and charge $2000 plus a month to those who need it.

I can competely see no rush to find a cure.
