View Full Version : Who here was born into privilege and realized that was wrong?

I was born into a relatively progressive for capitalist upper-middle class family but I always felt that something was wrong with the system. I've rejected it pretty much by now. I wonder how many people here are like this.

I tend not to make a big deal about my "privileged" background (which is relative; being part of the so-called "middle class" or being "white" or whatever shouldn't be something one should make a big deal about and feel guilty and have this guilt as the impetus for activism, etc)...

Although, now, I don't see how I'm benefited in anyway from my background. I still have to work shitty jobs, I'll probably be raking in a student loan debt earlier than expected, etc. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to easily pay off those debts considering what career I'm trying to get into (journalism) and other factors.

I wasn't born rich and my parents are not what one would normally consider "part of the bourgeoisie" so I don't see why I should be worried/feeling guilty/wrong.

I have a few cops in my family but other than them everyone else in my family comes from a working class background. Having said that, it doesn't matter to me what conditions people were born into or what class background they have - as long as they are sincere and fighting for the goal of working-class self-emancipation, they are a comrade of mine.

Capitalists are not evil people, they are just, at worst, upholding an evil system. Obviously, then if someone was born to a family of wealthy business owners and has a trust-fund as so on, then they have the option of choosing to use their educational background and financial resources to aid working class movements or revolutionary politics.

A lot of people in the early socialist movement (at least in the US) did not necessarily come from the relatively new industrial working class. But the labor conflicts and working-class fight-back of that early era convinced them that capitalism was not working and that rule by workers could produce a system in the interests of the vast majority of people.

Plenty of working class people are convinced by ruling class ideology, it can go both ways though and professional or upper class people can adopt working class politics.

I come form a lower working class background. But I really don't care if you were born into the better off section of the working class. As long as you fight capitalism with us who really cares what bourgeois economic "class" you were born into? It really isn't "wrong" to be born into a family that is better off. Though, privilege is a buffer from reality in some cases and make some "middle class" leftist aloof and unaware of the conditions of the rest of the working class. When someone from the lower strata hears such, anger against the "middle class wankers" is perfectly understandable, but not all that helpful is build a viable leftist movement.

Good for you. Stop being lazy and get to work? Dont be a troll. You sound like an OIer here. What about the majority of people who arent as lucky as you and dont have parents that are still together, and dont have a financial background of any sort? We all work extremely hard and go to school.

I don't know what you mean by "wrong." The term "privilege" is often relative. Whenever you complain about unfairness, people tell you "you're lucky you have as much as you do." Sure, that's true, but it's mostly an attempt to shut you up. This is what people tell themselves all the time merely to get through the week. Many believe that because you have more than most, you don't deserve more. That's simply not true. The reason other people have less is there is a corrupt system. I don't know why the average person thinks communism will make them poor or significantly worse off in some way. The majority of the world's inequalities are the result of a small elite. Even doctors would benefit from communism.

Modern inequalities are the result of structural problems. Sure, you'd probably be a great person if you through away privilege to aid the poor. But most of us aren't inclined to be so self-sacrificial. We get accustomed to certain things, which is why advocate questioning spending choices. Most purchases are a waste.

Many people have difficulty working because they see the world how it really is. It's easier to work a menial job when you believe getting a "good job" from the boss is the greatest thing in the world.

Thankfully, I am in a fairly good situation. I work during the summer, and my happiness goes down exponentially. I have depression, and when I attempt to work merely to get by, I don't see the point. Alienation from labor is something Marx was right about. We are naturally inclined to produce. If I can't pursue my creativity freely and happily, what's the point of sustaining a job? So I can spend my evening watching crappy television to remove the stress caused by the job in the first place?

The idea that we live in a society where people have to work long hours doing things they hate merely to be given the opportunity to succeed, personally, is distressing. Parents give the excuse that "I had to do it."

I can give you so many pessimistic ways of looking at the workforce. We could be here all day. I'm aware that my disadvantages may be somewhat caused by my mental health circumstances, but I don't know how people do it. Life is disturbing.

I'm 99% sure that was sarcasm.

Anyways, I would say I come from a privileged family... I mean I don't have to pay for my college stuff and I don't have to work to survive. Pretty cushy, I know. It makes me feel shitty though. I hate living in this upper-middle class neighborhood where everyone seems to take what they have for granted.
