What leftist science fiction or fantasy would you recommend? (Can be books, movies, tv shows, etc.)

I'm not sure if Fire on the Mountain counts as fantasy or science fiction but it's set in an alternative history....actually now that I think of it the book can certainly count as science fiction.

I've never read it because I haven't been able to get my hands on it, but from what I've read about the book it seems very interesting.

The Dispossessed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dispossessed) by Ursula LeGuin. One of the finest scifi novels ever written, with a huge leftist bent.

The Parable novels by Octavia Butler

fucking fantastic, best fiction novel I've ever read

not really "leftist" exactly, but it's a hyper-realistic portrait of what barbarism would actually look like after the collapse of capitalism

Stuff by Kim Stanley Robinson and stuff by Robert J. Sawyer well Kims stuff namedly the Mars series is very leftist (Gist/resource based economy etc..) and Roberts stuff atleast what I've read never deals with economics much but his stance on the issues he does deal with match the views a lot of leftists would have.

What, no leftist fantasy recommendations? Just sci-fi novels?

Thanks, at any rate. I'll take a look at these recommendations...

If you want an oldie but a goodie, try News From Nowhere and A Dream of John Ball by the 19th Century socialist William Morris. Both are available online. Also try Morris' The Wood Beyond the World and The Well at World's End for medieval fantasy novels.

I've read News From Nowhere.
I haven't read any of the others you mentioned by William Morris, but I've read a few of his essays (I especially like the one titled Useful Work versus Useless Toil (http://www.marxists.org/archive/morris/works/1884/useful.htm)).

Some of the scifi novels of Mack Davis have a left-wing slant. Turns out he was a member of the Socialist Labor Party (USA), and his father was an SLP presidential candidate.

From what I understand, Ken MacLeod's Fall Revolution series is pretty good, and overtly leftist.

I also suggest the book that just came out recently called "Marxism and Science Fiction" which will help you a lot in terms of recommending and analyzing certain leftist Sci Fi stories. It also contains an extensive recommended reading list (as well as viewing list) in the back. http://www.amazon.com/Red-Planets-Marxism-Science-Classics/dp/0819569135

Valerio Evangelisti wrote several novels which included metaphors of the rising of capitalism, in particular the "screaming metal saga"

I got the audiobook for Perdido Street Station, and I've listened to over a third of it, and it is FANTASTIC.

Any recommendations for leftist sci-fi television or movies?
