I live in Oklahoma, a place of galling conservatism and religiosity, the so-called Buckle of the Bible belt. Even in a relatively liberal part of the state I am confronted daily with obstinate displays of religiosity and anti-scientific sentiment.
The bellicose ranting of Rush Limbaugh fills the brains of people in my family with smugness and ignorance.
The left scene is dead in the water, apart from the Oklahoma City Infoshop, which I am only tenuously connected with.
I am a student at a community college working at becoming a writer and long-time critic of capitalism, religion, and authoritarianism.
I consider myself to be a libertarian Marxist, a strong believer in "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", democratic decision making, communal property, the wastefulness and stupidity of consumerist capitalism and the inevitable triumph of compassion and science over greed and faith.
I think that dissent is important to Marxism, that suppression of disagreeing voices leads to totalitarianism and destruction.
I support the EZLN and RAWA strongly, think that Venezuela's brand of "socialism" is flawed but not without its good points, think that people calling Obama a "radical socialist communist" is ironic given his corporate protectionism and his gaggle of pro-Wall Street cronies.
I look forward to your guidance and input, as my political beliefs are always changing as I learn new things.
