MOSCOW – A huge explosion during rush hour in a subway station in central Moscow on Monday morning killed more than 20 people, officials said.
The cause of the blast was not immediately clear, but it raised fears of a renewal of terrorism in Moscow. The subway system, one of the world’s most extensive, had been subjected to attacks related to the separatist war in the Chechnya in the early part of the last decade.
Officials said the explosion occurred at 7:50 am in the Lubyanka subway station, killing people both on the platform and in an incoming train. Numerous others were injured.
“The blast hit the second carriage of a metro train that stopped at Lubyanka," Irina Andrianova, a spokeswoman for the emergency ministry, told Reuters.
In September 2004, a suicide bomber killed at least 9 other people and wounded more than 50 outside the Rizhskaya subway. In February of that same year, a woman carrying a bomb destroyed another subway car, killing at least 41 as the train moved between the Paveletskaya and the Avtozavodskaya stations at one of the busiest times of the day.
The Lubyanka station, where the latest explosion occurred, takes its name from the infamous Lubyanka prison that also served as the former headquarters of the KGB, the Soviet-era secret police.

Two explosions hit the Moscow subway system during rush hour this morning, killing at least 25 people.
Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said the dead in the first blast include 14 people who were in the train and another 11 people who were on the platform at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow.
"The blast hit the second carriage of a metro train that stopped at Lubyanka, at 0756 (0356 GMT)," she said.
The headquarters of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), successor to the Soviet-era KGB, is located just above the station.
State news agencies ITAR-Tass and RIA Novosti report a second explosion hit the Park Kultury station about 45 minutes later.
"This blast rocked Park Kultury at 0838 (0438 GMT)," Interfax said, quoting a security source. "There are killed and injured."
