On March 18 nearly 200 members and supporters of striking United Food and Commercial Workers Local 791 (http://www.ufcw791.org/) picketed and held the line outside Shaws Supermarket in Dorchester, Mass., in solidarity with 310 women and men workers from the warehouse distribution center in Methuen, Mass.

The warehouse distributes most of the perishable foods such as meat, fruits, dairy and vegetables to 194 Shaws and Star Market supermarkets across New England.

Workers voted on March 7 to strike to fight what they termed substandard wage increases and skyrocketing costs of health care insurance. UFCW Local 791 represents approximately 5,500 members in 36 Shaws Supermarkets in Massachusetts and Rhode Island as well as distribution centers in Methuen and Wells, Maine.

Shaws belongs to a supermarket chain that is part of Supervalu, a company that also owns Jewel-Osco Brands and Albertsons. Supervalus CEO, Jeffrey Noddle, receives an annual total compensation of $3.55 million, according to Forbes.com.

A fund has been established for the workers affected by the strike. Contributions payable to UFCW Local 791 Methuen D.C. Strike Fund can be mailed to UFCW Local 791, 55 Norfolk Ave., South Easton, MA 02375.

I wonder how local media is shaping the mood towards this. The ever popular "they should be grateful they even have a job!" diatribe?

i am touched by this article, i am a warehouse worker so i understand the kind of work they have to do.

Its something that tend to happen verry often in buisness to cut in the logistic sector to same some money.

this move is Verry Unwise from the bosses, the last thing you want is Underpaid, grumpy employee who can barely make a living to manage million of dollars of material every day.

The logistic sector of a workplace is litteraly the spine, and just like with the human body, you really dont want to mess with the spine, the repercution could be verry grim.

Even tho i am often whiny about strikes and all that, i say to those guy: keep up the good fight!
