Can someone send some links my way showing obama is not even remotely a socialist please? I think we had a thread here showing why he isn't but i can't find it :(

This article, written by a comrade I know rather well, really only shows conclusively that he isn't a Marxist, though the arguments can generally be extrapolated to other forms of socialism as well: http://tnjn.com/2009/sep/28/op-ed-obamas-policies-are-a-fa/
However, if the people you're trying to convince honestly think Obama is a socialist, they probably don't realize that Marxism is just a subset of socialism, so it should work fine.

It's a problem of definition, not an unawareness of news reports. The people who call Obama a socialist are using the word "socialist" to mean "regulating the competitive marketplace" or some such thing. They were never asserting that Obama wants to see private business abolished.

Obama hasn't done anything to end private property in the U.S. Socialism is the abolition of private property and of the whole capitalist class structure. No matter how big capitalist government gets it is still capitalist if society still consists of the same class lines and the bourgeoisie dominates the means of production.

If socialism is indeed 'public ownership or intervention in the economy', then even the most die hard right wing conservatives should be considered socialists. In fact this definition essentially makes socialism a synonym for government itself.

So in the end you must tell the conservative that if they believe Obama is a socialist then they must be a socialist too.
