The link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8521510.stm)to the radio interview is halfway down the article, it is pretty disgusting.
He apparently doesn't believe that people in standard class on the train work.

The poor tory has to now sit with the common people becasue they are no longer paying for first class. "The veteran Tory MP said there was a "totally different type of people" in standard-class train carriages." What an asshole. Most of the people sitting in first class don't work in my opinion.

Slash their wages with 80% and give them term limits, seem to be the best cure for this.

Well there you have it folks, the mindset of a Tory. If only our right wingers could be that honest and admit they're just as elitist and quit pretending to be populist.
Yeah, Steve Forbes and Manhattan/DC socialite Ann Coulter are really the people's people.

ucch, the Torys. I Hope labour wins, even if they are crypto-capitalist, because we might have a reinstitution of thatcherism under Cameron. Last polling showed 40% support for the Tories, 31% labour, 20% Liberal Democrat....Speaking of that, can someone explain the liberal democracy party to me and their ideologies? are they center left? center right?

What's the difference in ticket cost of a first class train seat and a standard train seat in the UK?

He has already been forced to leave parliament over him and his wife's interesting expense claims and his political career is dead and buried. He is just lashing out and saying what he pleases because he is no longer in active politics.
To be fair to him, he didn't say people in Standard Class are unemployed, simply that they aren't working on the train. He claims that because MPs have to work while they are on the train they need space to do it in.
That is rubbish of course. I have seen MSPs (Members of the Scottish parliament), including party leaders in standard class on the train doing their work without apparent bother with my own eyes. Winterton presumably has never been in Standard class and is simply fearful about what the beastly masses must be like.

Slash their wages with 80% and give them term limits, seem to be the best cure for this.Stuff like that seems tempting on the face of it, but that would take their wages way below poverty level and it would be back to the nineteenth century "only the wealthy can join the club" Parliament. It would make the problem far worse in other words.
Indexing their pay to that of the average skilled worker is a considerably better plan.
