I have to write a cause-and-effect essay on the famine in the Ukraine under Stalin. What are some good sources and what are some points I should make? I'm taking the position that it was not orchestrated by the Soviet government.

The book Another View of Stalin by Ludo Martins makes a few good points. I have it if you want. It has a section devoted just to that.

He focuses mainly on the lack of good sources on the famine and how most of them come from fascists and Robert Conquest, who he alleges is a man who worked for the British disinformation services.

The motivation of the Western powers to use the famine as propaganda and lie is very intense, which may vary well result in false sources and information. I'd definitely mention why another look at what happened is reasonable and isn't the same thing as denying the Holocaust.

On a semi-similar topic, question the motive of Stalin to lead a genocide against the Ukrainian people.

He also mentions that the Kulak resistance to the collectivization caused much harm to the agriculture. But really I find the book to contain a lot of weak sources and half truths.

There is also the more intellectual Mark Tauger. You can find his works here.

Its pretty complicated to go through though.

But in all seriousness, I'd like to see where you go with this and if you would post it on the forum (either before or after you turn it in) for us to read I'd be grateful.

Also, I love proofreading and if you want a peer-editor (I won't attack any points in the paper, only the grammar) I'd be happy to fulfill that function.

I'm taking the position that it was not orchestrated by the Soviet government.I made some relatively in-depth posts in the early pages of this thread (http://www.revleft.com/vb/stalin-thread-all-t100814/index.html). This post (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=1356546&postcount=58) in particular tackles the question as to whether the famine was man made

For works on the subject, Davies The Economic Transformation of the Soviet Union touches on it in a good statistical manner. These might be useful papers - Wheatcroft The First 35 Years of Soviet Living Standards and Soviet Statistics of Nutrition & Mortality During Times of Famine; Ellman Soviet Repression Statistics: Some Comments

Well start by talking about the need to reevaluate the historic event due to the much spread propaganda.
2. Follow up by the fascist and the unreliable sources used in the allegation of the famine.
3. Play the number game and question the methods used in counting the victims.
4. Question the motivation of Stalin. Archival evidence, other info, etc showing the unlikelihood of it being man made.

I dunno really. Once you have the information I think its rather easy.
