As far as I'm aware we have noe idea. Some mathematical models of the universe works better with them.

I would anyway advice you to ask on a science/physics forum to get a more precise answer than this forum can provide you with.

Super String theory; I just stared delving into the subject a bit ago, I belive they do exist and have the potential to change the face of our earth if we can understand them better. I have a hypothesis about the corolation between the research Dr. Timmothy Leary was doing with the effects of LSD on the psycye and his 8 circut model of conciousness and the 11 dimensions of unified M theory. All research stopped by the imperialists and thier wars on drugs. Research that is still hindered today, due to the scarcity of good acid, and fear of incarseration.

LSD and string theory... what more do you need?

M theory is a more contemporary attempt to unite all the different elements of string theory into one all-defining 'theory of everything'. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-yEu-b_YD0&feature=related) is a documentary by the BBC on it. It's a bit dramatic, but informative nonetheless.

There is also the work of Neil Turok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Turok), a theoretical physicist responsible for the cyclical model of the universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_model), which applies string theory to cosmology. His work is ground-breaking.

The question was about cosmic strings, which is not the same subject as string theory. Two separate ideas with similar names. In the words of the all-knowing Wikipedia: "There is no direct connection between string theory and the theory of cosmic strings (the names were chosen independently by analogy with ordinary string). However, work in string theory revived interest in cosmic strings in the early 2000s."
