Ramallah residents have named a street after an activist who was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in 2003 while protesting against Tel Aviv's demolition of Palestinian homes in Gaza.

Family, friends and supporters including students from a local secondary school participated in the dedication ceremony on Tuesday - the seventh anniversary of Rachel Corrie's death.

Ms Corrie's mother Cindy, who is visiting Israel and the Occupied Territories (why can't the Morning Star use the term "occupied Palestine"?--S.M.) to take part in a wrongful death lawsuit against the Israeli government, thanked the Palestinian people for continuing to provide her family with unfailing support.

Addressing a crowd of about 50 Palestinians, including the mayor of Ramallah, Ms Corrie said: "I just wanted you to know that you do not stand alone - people are stepping up, we will not be silent."

The coming weeks also mark the seventh anniversaries of the killing of British activist Thomas Hurndall, who was shot in the head while shielding children from Israeli sniper fire in Rafah and died in hospital nine months later, and the shooting of US citizen Brian Avery in Jenin, who survived.

Last weekend was the first anniversary of the shooting of US citizen Tristan Anderson, who was hit in the head by a high-velocity tear gas canister fired by Israeli soldiers in Nilin.

Mr Anderson is still recovering in an Israeli hospital.

Elsewhere, Israel has lifted a five-day closure that it imposed on the West Bank following the Interior Ministry's approval of new housing for Jewish settlers in occupied east Jerusalem.

On Tuesday police and soldiers used stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse hundreds of stone-hurling youths in the city, wounding scores of Palestinians.

Ten police officers sustained minor injuries.

The court trial for Rachel Corrie (http://www.darkgovernment.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/rachel-corrie.jpg), an American peace activist killed aged 23 by an Israeli army bulldozer in Gaza in 2003, has begun in Haifa.
She was peacefully protesting against Israel's demolition of Palestian homes when the bulldozer crushed her to death.

The parents of Corrie are now suing the government of Israelon charges that she was "denied basic human rights" and of "gross negligence".
Israelsays the driver could not see the activist and it was an honest mistake.

Al Jazeera (http://www.youtube.com/user/AlJazeeraEnglish) spoke to her parents, Craig and Cindy Corrie, about their daughter's death in an exclusive interview.

I wonder what the pathetic idiotic ignorant right wing american response would be.

a defender of right wingers would say "it was an accident, shit happens. The war against terrorist palestinians must continue"

In reality this is a rather rare thing for someone to die accidentally. Perhaps it can be ignored by rightwingers, or enlighten them about the true issues.

perhaps a bit of right wing media sensationalism can be advantageous for the struggles.

Aljazeera is a funny news channel, they are feminist, very objective and at times do positive documentaries about communism. Perhaps they follow the tide of anti-american imperialism. I remember they did i doco about women guerilla fighters in Nepal's Maoist revolution, it was sort of right wing, but very objective.

2 injured in Beit Jala rally for Rachel Corrie
Published today (updated) 21/03/2010 20:16
Bethlehem - Ma'an - Two locals were hurt on Sunday when Israeli forces used riot-dispersal means in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, against a rally commemorating the killing of Rachel Corrie.

Corrie, a US peace activist with the International Solidarity Movement, was killed on 16 March 2003 when she was crushed by a bulldozer operated by an Israeli soldier, preparing to demolish a Palestinian's home in Gaza.

The rally was joined by dozens of residents, representatives and international peace activists, reporting that Israeli soldiers prevented them from reaching land behind the old Crimsan road in Bethlehem and began firing tear-gas canisters. Two residents suffered tear-gas inhalation and were transferred to the Arab Society Hospital in Beit Jala for treatment.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said that "30 Palestinians hurled rocks as Israeli security forces in Beit Jala in a violent riot," in which forces used riot dispersal means. Concerning the injuries, the spokeswoman said she was not immediately aware but would look into the incident.

Popular committee coordinator, Imad Abu Nasser, said the weekly rallies would continue despite Israeli obstacles and checkpoints

Let the White House know accountability is required for the death of Rachel Corrie and others injured or killed in Gaza

03/2010

On March 16, 2003, human rights activist Rachel Corrie was killed while trying to protect a home in Gaza from demolition while the family was inside. An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier ran over Rachel in a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer. Rachel was 23 years old. Seven years after her killing, Rachel's parents are still seeking truth and accountability. Israel must be held accountable for Rachel's killing - take action now.

After Rachel's killing, Israel conducted an investigation that even the U.S. State Department said was not thorough enough and neither credible nor transparent. The U.S. government advised Rachel's parents Cindy and Craig Corrie to sue Israel, which they did in March 2005. Their case is finally starting in the Haifa District Court in Israel today.

Follow the trial at the Rachel Corrie Foundation website http://www.rachelcorriefoundation.org/.

CCR sued Caterpillar (view the details of the case Corri et al. v. Caterpillar (http://www.ccrjustice.org/ourcases/current-cases/corrie-et-al.-v.-caterpillar)) on behalf of Rachel's parents as well as four Palestinian families whose family members were killed or injured when Caterpillar bulldozers demolished their homes. The court dismissed that case in 2007 because it would put into question the U.S. government's decision to pay for the bulldozer sales.

Accountability is required not only for Rachel's killing but for the thousands of killings and injuries in Gaza.

Contact the White House to break the blockade on Gaza by phone at (202) 456-1111; fax (202) 456-2461; or email at www.whitehouse.gov/contact (http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact). Tell President Obama to break the Gaza blockade; provide immediate humanitarian aid; and urge Special Envoy Mitchell to visit Gaza.

Thank you for standing with the Corries and all the families whose loved ones have been killed and harmed throughout Palestine/Israel.

Sincerely,
Annette Dickerson

Newly dedicated Rachel Corrie Street in Ramallah.

On March 16th 2003, an Israeli bulldozer killed the American activist Rachel Corrie in Rafah, Gaza. Today, in Kafr Sur, near Tulkarem, and in Ramallah, family, friends and supporters gathered together to commemorate the anniversary of her murder.

Students of Kafr Sur Secondary School, who have been working on a research project about Rachel’s life and death, today marked the anniversary with a march to a memorial stone at the entrance to the village.

The students were joined by children from the nearby primary school, as the stone was unveiled and speeches were delivered by the headmaster, one of the students, and an ISM activist.

A boy in Tulkarem smiles and holds photos of Rachel.

Approximately fifty Palestinians, Internationals and media then joined Craig and Cindy Corrie, Rachel’s parents, for the inauguration ceremony of Rachel Corrie Street in Ramallah.

Speeches were delivered by both the Mayor and Governor of Ramallah, the Minister of State, National Parties’ Coordinator, an ISM activist and Rachel’s parents. At both events, speakers talked of the lasting impact left by Rachel, as an inspiration to those involved with the non-violent resistance in Palestine and across the world.

Rachel’s mother spoke about how her daughter has become a symbol for the anti-Occupation movement, and of how grateful she and her family are to the Palestinians they have come to know and love over the past seven years for their unfailing support, despite the suffering they themselves continue to experience.

Last weekend saw the one year anniversary of Tristan Anderson (http://justicefortristan.org/) being hit in the head with a high velocity tear gas canister in Nilin. Tristan is still recovering in an Israeli hospital.

Did IDF general cut short probe into
U.S. activist Corrie's death? (http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1159290.html)

By Jack Khoury

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/images/0.gif
The Military Police interrogation of a key suspect in the killing of American human rights activist Rachel Corrie was cut short by a direct order of then GOC Southern, Maj. Gen. Doron Almog, army documents obtained by Haaretz suggest.

The documents come from the Military Police investigation file and were submitted as evidence to the Haifa District Court when a member of the MP investigation team testified in court during the civil lawsuit case Corrie's family has brought against the State of Israel.

The Corries' attorney, Hussein Abu Hussein, confronted the former investigator with a protocol of his questioning of the commander of the D9 Caterpillar bulldozer that drove over the activist.

The officer's record states his interrogation of the bulldozer commander came to an unusual end. "It's now 18:12. Maj (res.) K entered the interrogation room and told the witness he must not say anything or write anything, by a direct order from GOC Southern Command. I confirm this occurred and I sign this in my hand," the officer wrote, adding his signature. There the interrogation concluded.

Prior to the intervention the soldier was describing the moment he understood Rachel Corrie had been hurt, insisting he could not see her from the driver's cabin.

Although the bulldozer commander later gave further testimony, Abu Hussein said the Corrie family took the interference of such a senior officer very seriously. "This makes it absolutely clear there was at least an attempt, no matter how effective, to intervene in the investigation," he told Haaretz. "The documents proves it, black on white, that there was an attempt to prevent the bulldozer driver from giving a full testimony on the circumstances in which the deceased was killed."

Abu Hussein also said that this violated a promise by then prime minister Ariel Sharon to then American president George W. Bush to carry out a thorough, in-depth investigation.

Claims about attempts by Almog to influence the investigation were also made at a hearing in the Rishon Letzion Magistrate's Court on March 18, 2003. Military Police approached the court to obtain an autopsy order for Corrie's body, to determine whether she was indeed crushed by the bulldozer or killed by hand-grenades soldiers were alleged to have thrown during the incident.

The court record states that one of the investigating officers said the Military Police had been delayed "by an argument between GOC Southern Command and the military advocate general about whether to investigate and on what charges."

Corrie, 23, whose hometown is Olympia, Washington, was killed in Rafah on March 16, 2003, while standing in front of a bulldozer that was demolishing structures along the Philadelphi route. The IDF claims the 65-ton bulldozer never touched Corrie, while eyewitnesses insist it crushed her deliberately.

Maj. Gen. (res.) Doron Almog told Haaretz that he had no knowledge of the claims and no intention to comment. He said he had no idea what documents were in question or how reliable they were, as seven years have passed since the event. Almog noted that while he did not wish to discuss the details of this particular event, he had never covered up any investigation and a full internal investigation was carried out in his command at the time and submitted to the chief of staff. The IDF spokesperson was not available for comment.
