An announcement at a Walmart store in New Jersey ordering black people to leave brought chagrin and apologies Wednesday from leaders of the company, which has built a fragile trust among minority communities.

A male voice came over the public-address system Sunday evening at a store in Washington Township in southern New Jersey and calmly announced: "Attention Walmart customers: All black people leave the store now."

Shoppers in the store at the time said a manager quickly got on the public address system and apologized for the remark. And while it wasn't clear whether a rogue patron or an employee was responsible for the comment, many customers expressed their anger to store management.

"I want to know why such statements are being made, because it flies in the face of what we teach our children about tolerance for all," said Sheila Ellington, of Monroe. She and her friend, Patricia Covington, were in the store at the time and have said they now plan to boycott the retailer.

Officials with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., said that the announcement was "unacceptable" and that they're trying to determine who made it -- whether an employee or a rogue patron -- and how it happened.

"We are just as appalled by this incident as our customers," the company said in a statement Wednesday. "Whoever did this is just wrong and acted in an inappropriate manner. Clearly, this is completely unacceptable to us and to our customers."

This is not the first time the retailer has faced such problems.

There have been several past instances of black customers claiming they were treated unfairly at Walmart stores, and the company faced lawsuits alleging that women were passed over in favor of men for pay raises and promotions.

However, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has said the company has worked hard in recent years to show it cares about diversity.

Bill Mitchell, a former Walmart employee who shopping Wednesday at the store, said that he was saddened to hear about the announcement but that "as a black man, I've heard worse things."

As she left the store Wednesday, customer Sharon Osbourne of Williamstown called the announcement "appalling, stupid and sad."

I don't find that funny. It's not that I'm offended or appalled...I just don't see the humor in it. :\

Honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was some random guy off the street who picked up an employee phone and made the announcement. I can recall a lot of material in old phreak texts about messing around with the phone systems at large retail stores and one of the classic pranks is making inflammatory or joke announcements over the PA system. It's not like they secure the phones at all in the aisles and such, and some of the PAs are even accessible remotely if you know the right extension.

That said, Wal Mart can still suck my nuts, I will never shop there if I can help it.

It's pretty silly to blame Walmart as a company for this - especially when there's so much you could blame it for besides.

I'd be willing to bet it's a "rogue customer."

I'd say it was almost certainly a "rogue" customer who got to the microphone, to be honest.

Yeah, nice and sophisticated middle-class people don't shop at Walmart, apparently.

Your 'Chinese made shit' sentiments are, of course, a lot more more racist -- and more likely to be accepted by the political mainstream -- than the silly humour of a random joker on a supermarket loudspeaker.

What's funny here - and I don't mean ha ha funny - is that this story went virtually worldwide while cases of police brutality are barely given nationwide coverage, and most receive no national coverage. This is a 'gotcha' story that the media knows would take off.

Walmart is a sh*t company indeed.
Having said that, this is likely not the fault of Walmart.

Yeah the topic is really misleading.

Yes, but noone thinks any Walmart store is going to suggest a policy like that.

Teen charged in NJ Walmart racial comment case (http://www.mail.com/Article.aspx/money/business/APNews/General-Business/20100320/U_US-Wal-Mart-Racial-Comment?pageid=1)

AP - Saturday, March 20, 2010

Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in the case of a racial comment that was made over the public-address system at a Walmart store in southern New Jersey.

Police said Saturday the Atlantic County teenager was arrested Friday on charges of harassment and bias intimidation. They say he's been released to the custody of his parents.

The incident happened Sunday evening when a male voice came over the Walmart public address system and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now." The announcement provoked an immediate apology from the store manager.

Authorities aren't releasing the boy's name because he's a juvenile, and they don't know whether he has an attorney.

Actually, Walmart has policies against labor unions. it is against there rules to start a union there, so we can agree it is not in our interests.

Yes, that's the case among probably the vast majority of retail chains and restaurant chains except in places where it would be prohibited.
