What is the left-wing perspective on the Mephedrone scaremongering? Is it dangerous? Is it harmful? Should it be made illegal? What do you think of the media coverage?

Making drugs illegal doesn't stop people from doing drugs. I think people should be able to put into their bodies what ever they want. I believe in education and harm reduction, not prohibition.

Go to erowid dot org they should have some unbiased info on it.

I don't know anyone who has used it. From online reports it sounds kind of nasty. That doesn't mean it should be banned. For more on it see: http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/4_methylmethcathinone/

It seems like it could be banned in the US under the Analog Act, a very screwed up law due to its arbitrariness. The Analog drug laws resemble anti-conspiracy laws which assume guilt or, at least, make a very aggressive and threatening accusation.

It seems to me like its almost like an addictive substance which mimics the effects of MDMA

I've been partying on this stuff a lot over the past week or so. I really enjoy it and havn't suffered any side effects, however a friend of mine did have a fit the other day and had to go to hospital. It was really fucking worrying. I'm guessing its because of meph, but he had been having a shit time recently and often gets stoned and drunk too, so maybe this stuff just pushed him over the edge. Another friend also has a bad story to tell about doing it ontop of a load of other stuff.

So from my experience, its a fun thing to do but should not be done in excess and not with a lot of other drugs. Not an expert though, and I eagerly await the findings of professional scientists.

Well, I don't really know what it is, besides being a drug and causing nasty effects, according to these posters.

In my opinion, in a communist society, these things should be well explicit, and everyone should have enough education on it to be able to make a sound choice.

I do think it should be discouraged. If you're being unhealthy on purpose, then when something happens to you, you're indirectly asking not to be treated right?

If you want to be unhealthy on purpose, that's fine by me. But you'll take care of your health on your own then.
I hope I answered the OP's question.

It's the 21st century equivalent of sniffing glue. Pretty scabby, short high.

In terms of the people that have 'died' from it, it's always been combined with something else. I seriously doubt it's any worse for you than pills or ket and almost certainly not as worse as excessive alcohol or fags. The Daily Mail though always needs something to latch on to.

I've done it quite a few times over the past few months, i've never had any adverse effects, even when i've mixed it with Alcohol/Weed. One of my mates also mixed it with Ket, which although not very clever, didn't result in any health problems.

It's one of these things that can obviously damage you if done to excess or with a large cocktail of other substances, or simply if you are unlucky enough to have an allergic reaction to it. However, it is probably (i'm no scientist) going to be found, after scientific tests, to have similar properties, side effects etc to MDMA - obviously Mkat and MDMA are chemical cousins, slightly related, whcih explains the similar highs they give.

nope, as far as i know its not allowed to offer (recipes/growtips etc for) illegal drugs. Talking about what individuals choose to put in their own body is up to them.

I read in the Guardian that the introduction to the club scene and surge of use coincided with an interception of MDMA into the UK and a shortage of the drug.

In the late 60s, in California, there was a crack-down on LSD suppliers which led to a lot of weird dodgy drugs being sold as LSD with bad results.

I don't know much about this new drug, but I would wager that most people would rather have e so it goes to show the insanity of prohibition drug policies and how they can actually create worse problems... like a synthetic that doesn't last as long and creates a habit-forming tolerance.

In the US there is a lot of talk about kids using inhalants now... risking permanent damage for a 90 second high and a headache? Jezzus get these kids some weed for godsakes!

Ive tried Meph and its not that bad, short high very little to no comedown. Unfortunatly two guys in s****horpe died the other weak by mixing meph with heroin. Although the news reported it as "they took another drug to come down from the meph high." TBH if your going to take supstances be sensible and dont be a dick. Humberside police have issued a statement saying that anyone who has taken Meph should get themselves checked out by a doctor but really i think its being blown out of proportion.
