La droite subit un recul plus fort que prévu. L’abstention atteint un niveau record. La gauche enregistre une large avance. Le Front de gauche s’installe dans le paysage politique. (http://www.humanite.fr/Regionales-2010)

Can anybody clarify this?
The NPA is some sort of radical left party right?
I assume the PS is the socialist party (social democratic?)
Ecologie is like the greens?
MoDem? Moderate democrats? Like christian democrats? Centre right?
FN is the National Front (LePen) right?
What is the front de gauche and the UMP?

MoDem is a centrist liberal party, led by this guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fran%C3%A7ois_Bayrou).
Front de Gauche is the Left Front, including the Communist Party.
UMP is Sarkozy's ruling conservative party.

Just adding that the other "major" party in the left front is the Left party made up by people who left the socialist party and aim in building a french version of Die Linke. And that the CPF is really -and sadly- a shadow of its former self.
So, nothing particularly good here. Just people blaming Sarkozy for their problems and not their actual cause -his pro-business policies.
Also, NPA would resemble the left current in Die Linke. I don't think they associate with the word "communist" but the majority in them views a collaboration with the Socialists unfavourably.

All together Trotsk took 3,6%, that is not bad; FG result also is good in these circumstances...the problem is what they do with these votes

The centre-right have been in power too long anyways. This is more of a rejection of the UMP than support for the socialist party. It wasn't too long ago when Sarkozy and his supporters were gloating over the SP's defeat.
Though the Front National's gains are disturbing too. We'll see in the parliamentary elections what gains can the left make.
