I caught this woman on Colbert Report a couple of nights ago. I haven't read the book, but there's a cute 20 min video they made to go along with it.

What do you guys think?

I think she makes some good points, however, given that her analysis is of the macro level big picture type, seems a bit silly not to at least mention what role capitalism plays in all of this.

In my opinion, there is nothing at all progressive about attacking working class people for consuming 'too much'. The video openly celebrates austerity (for example, it positively contrasts the relative poverty experienced in 1950s America, and the frugality which went with it, with American society today) and it blames capitalism for creating 'too much' mass consumption.

For socialists, of course, the problem with capitalism is not that it creates too much mass consumption, but that, on the contrary, it cannot meet the material needs and desires of humanity as a whole.
