Marsella was a user that got banned awhile back but keeps making sockpuppets. btw I don't think she was the user whore, because Marsella tends to make really, really excellent, in-depth posts, which whore didn't really do.

Well, I don't actually know the story. And I certainly wasn't around when the story really happened, but I just see it as a lone Communist bucking the RevLeft establisnment.
Again--I'm romanticizing. But part of being a member of the Bourgeoise is being a Laughing Cavalier.

One of the more interesting things I've found here on RevLeft isn't the differences of opinion of Cappies and Commies on Economics or Politics, but it's the actual worldview about what life really means and how it should be lived. What's fair and unfair or what is good and what is bad or what is funny or what is tragic. There's a real human dimension to what goes on here in OI that is really pretty dynamic and in a lot of ways productive if on wants to see the true diversity of the human understanding of what it means to be alive.
It's why I hang around. :)

From what I've seen, they all hate Ayn Rand, the Libertarians, and Ludwig von Mises.
That's something to fight against collectively, I reckon: A Triumvirate of Evil.
I can't quite see the difference between their stateless society and the Libertarian (?) An-cap society, except that the former won't allow capital, and they will enforce this prohibition with local, democratically-elected, worker councils.
I'm not sure what they are going to do if one of the democratically elected council members stands up and says "let's talk about this 'money' thingy again like they had in the old days, shall we?"

Nope, they were just a high school couple, and everything they did was consensual.
I'm sure someone will argue that a 15 year old cannot consent to sex, but wherever you stand on that, you still have to admit that there's a huge difference between this 18 year old having a sexual relationship with a 15 year old, and a true rapist or a creepy pedophile sitting outside of a school or something.

I don't want to sound controversial, but young teenage girls (13-17) are impressionable and are easily swayed by emotion and affection and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that 18+ year old men know this and would be willing to take advantage of that fact. Either way, for me it's creepy and wrong for a person of 16 and under to be in a relationship with an 18+ year old. But that's just me. I'd even go to saying that anyone under the age of 18 shouldn't be in a relationship with anyone over the age of 18.

In the USA, it varies from 16-18, the majority sets it at 16. 18 in Oregon, which surprises me a little. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_North_America#Oklahoma
In the UK, it's 16. The age of consent in England and Wales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_and_Wales) is 16, as specified by the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_Offences_Act_2003) (section 9) (http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2003/ukpga_20030042_en_2#pt1-pb5-l1g9). However it is illegal for a person to engage in sexual activity with an individual under the age of 18 if they are in a position of trust in relation to that individual (teacher, warder, carer, guardian, etc)
In Spain, it's still 13. In Mexico, it's as low as 12.
on edit, looks like it's 17 in Ireland. This girl's Irish.

So 16 and 17 year old teenagers can have sex with each other, but when one of them turns 18 its suddenly not okay?
Eh, I disagree with that. These are all broad generalizations, but 16 is about the age where people are conscious of their decisions. Even if they make the wrong decisions, they can realize where they went wrong and take responsibility for it. I think 16-19 year olds have a similar level of maturity, so any relationship within this realm shouldn't be considered too "out there".
*shrug* it just depends on the individuals, I guess.

I don't really subscribe that a 16 year old has the same level of maturity to have the same judgement as someone of 18-19. In some countries 16 year olds are still classified as children and are treated as children, so I just can't see how they would have the same experiences or education in life to make certain 'conscious' judgements, especially one that may involve an 18 year old who might have influenced that person's decision.
So 16 and 17 year old teenagers can have sex with each other, but when one of them turns 18 its suddenly not okay
I see where you're coming from here. But I feel there needs to be boundaries and limits set.
Say a 15 year old who is 16 next week and engages in a relationship with an 18 year old, would that be ok ?
(we might have to start a separate thread on this :p)
mollymae

Well, we could recite "what ifs" ad nauseum. My whole point is that although there should be boundaries, the boundaries should be more fluid because it all depends on the individuals.

I'd even go to saying that anyone under the age of 18 shouldn't be in a relationship with anyone over the age of 18.
That's absolutely ridiculous.
And just because 14-18 year old girls are easily swayed by affection doesn't mean they're not capable of being mentally mature enough to have sex. "Easily swayed by affection" and "uninformed about safe sex" are two entirely different things.
(By the way, the age of consent in the majority of states in the US is 16)

Looks like Hayenmill's off the hook legally. But I detect sheepishness on his part. So deep down he knows she's too young for him. (I should charge for all this psychiatric advice.)
The girl needs a more sensitive and mature individual to bring her along... someone like ... oh, I don't know.;)
on edit, looks like it's 17 in Ireland. This girl's Irish.
Dammit, when the hell did this conversation degenerate into sex?!!

That's absolutely ridiculous.
And just because 14-18 year old girls are easily swayed by affection doesn't mean they're not capable of being mentally mature enough to have sex. "Easily swayed by affection" and "uninformed about safe sex" are two entirely different things.
(By the way, the age of consent in the majority of states in the US is 16)
having an opinion is 'absolutely ridiculous' !??
If we're not going to show some sort of boundary or approach that tackles an issue that could well be paedophilia or someone taking advantage of someone then let's drop the age consent rule altogether
I don't know about you but I take such an issue seriously and I would hope that there is law in place that prohibits anyone vulnerable being a victim of any abuse of trust or being taking advantage of. A message needs to be sent out that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and i think that this 'borderline ok' mentality is dodgy.

Take advantage of it? A 17 year old person is mature enough to have sex. Your logic behind making it illegal is that some people might get into relationships thinking only about sex while their partner think it's something more meaningful. In other words, you want it to be a criminal offense to have a purely sexual motive going into a relationship because it might end up hurting someones feelings.

Hey guys, just for fun: best and worst presidents of your lifetime.
I was born in may 1992, so for best I have to choose between Clinton and George Bush Sr. :| But I'm kind of ignorant of the latter so I'm not sure.
Worst would definitely be George W. Bush.

I was born during the evil "Reagan years" which proved deregulation to be a failure (once again). Reagan also engaged in funding military dictatorships all around Latin America, which killed hundreds of thousands directly and millions indirectly. He also supported Suharto, and even aided Pol Pot. His policies are why we're in the mess we're in.
Bush I had the first Gulf War, which was a huge lie as well and had nothing to do with Kuwaiti democracy. Clinton's wars were a tad different, but at least he got Indonesia out of East Timor.
Worst Reagan.
Best: none; can't really say.

I did make baked artichokes for dinner, however. Yes, baked. Not steamed. Really good.
Sounds good. So how did you do that? How long did you cook them?
Last night we had this:
Catalan Chicken
1kg firm beef tomatoes
4 tbsp olive oil
1 small chicken, jointed, or 4-6 joints such as breasts and legs
1 large onion, halved and sliced
2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced
150ml dry sherry
6-8 strands saffron, soaked in 2 tsp boiling water
1-2 bay leaves
1 short stick cinnamon
Salt and freshly ground pepper
To finish
1 tbsp paprika
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp fresh breadcrumbs
1 tbsp chopped almonds
Halve the tomatoes, discarding the seeds.
With the curved side in your palm, grate the flesh on a coarse grater; stop before you reach the tomatoes' skin.
Heat the oil in a heavy pan on a medium heat. Fry the chicken for about 10 minutes until golden. Remove and reserve. In the fat that remains in the pan, fry the onion, garlic and pepper until golden. Add the tomato pulp, sherry and saffron with its water, and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10-15 minutes to evaporate excess liquid - you want a fairly thick sauce at this stage. Return the chicken to the pan with the bay leaves, cinnamon and seasoning. Bring to a simmer, cover loosely and cook for about 30 minutes until the chicken is tender and the sauce thick and jammy.
Meanwhile, to finish, heat 1 tbsp oil over a medium-high heat and fry the breadcrumbs and almonds until golden. Stir in the paprika and tip over the chicken just before serving.
The best part is that as a rich Bourgeoise is that it cost me $.07 per serving so the whole dinner for four cost under $.50. If I were a poor Proletarian we would have gone out to Burger King and dinner for four would have been $30. Being a Bourgeoise does have its perks. :D

Heavens, that Catalan chicken sounds good. I'm going to try it. For true. They don't exactly give away saffron, though, right? $9.79/gram! http://www.thespicehouse.com/spices/coupe-grade-spanish-saffron
Allow me to share my Moroccan chicken recipe after I try your Catalan.
The artichokes came in a sealed plastic bag at Target with a recipe for steaming and a recipe for baking. To bake, you have to spread out the leaves (press them nose down on the counter first, and maybe slice off top1/2 inch with serrated knife), then pour fresh lemon juice and a Tbsp of olive oil right down in there so that they both drizzle down to the heart. Also chop some garlic (1 clove each, at least, but you can put 10 and it won't hurt anything). Add a little broth if you want; I did not.
Sprinkle with sea salt and wrap tightly in aluminum foil. Bake at 425 for 45-70 minutes depending on size. The garlic was tasty, but a bit of a chore to get it to go down into the leaves. Maybe mince it and mix with the olive oil & lemon juice next time to help it penetrate down. (My cooking is like my politics ... off the cuff!)
I added bread crumbs before sealing. Next time I'll add a half tbsp of wooshishshushshishshistashire sauce too.
Happy cooking.

Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets

I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too
How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too
There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie that we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you

No. He couldn't have been thanked that many times because we've only just been able to thank restricted members. Before that people will have given him positive rep, which modifies his rep score by the rep power, given that a number of members have a rep power in the low 20s to mid 30s means he'd have been positive repped a lot less.

Agreed as Stiglitz also made that remark about communism - although it was clear he was talking about state communism (i.e. state capitalism).
LeftSideDown is constantly making invalid claims without even citing source, not even Mises forums.
He has recently been attributing to "the founders" quotes they didn't even say: such as Jefferson opposing majority rule (which he favored) and the misattributed quote to Franklin about two wolves and a sheep.
"Liberty for the wolves is death for the lambs." (not franklin either, but that's the truth.)
There has to be liberty for all, which necessitates libertarian-socialism, or some democracy.

You'll also notice Bud has been here longer, has pretentions to "social democracy"* and isn't a bellend. You on the other hand have been here for fuck all time, have vastly different politics and are, I'm afraid to say, a bit of a bellend; your status as a bellend is further cemented by your sour grapes claim that we only don't like you because you're right. We don't. If we thought you were right you'd have a positive rep and I wouldn't be calling you a bellend.

Woah woah woah. Why should reputation have to be something you earn? The point of communism is to provide a basic standard of living even to those who cannot "earn" a living. Since I'm obviously deficient at earning reputation it should be given to me from the accumulated reputation of those already on the site!

You guys should make some kind of market where we can speculate on peoples reputation and whatnot. We can buy stocks and bonds and form trusts and whatnot. That would be pretty sweet.
As of now I would sell LeftSideDown and buy Bud Struggle.
We could also loan rep points. So lets say I loan LeftSide some points. Since it appears that the more bad rep you have, the more you are bound to get and vice versa, such a loan could pay off. So then I would be payed back with interest.

One set of reps I did like was a resent tirade against leftside by about four different members where each one was a single word profanity apart from the last which was "unconstructive". So last night----
I play a open mike night on occasion at the local wine and cheese bar in my neighborhood, it's reasonable well heeled with a good smattering of Bourgeoise in attendance. And I played:
"I Never Did No Wandering" (from A Mighty Wind.--GREAT movie)
"The Snows They Melt the Soonist" (a Sting song--kind of a response of a really cute woman that HATES men singing songs she wrote like "You Made Me a Whore!")
"Poncho and Leftie" (getting there.)
And then for a finale "the Internationale". I sang it slow and deliberate and enunciated the words. I got a REALLY good response. A number of the the BMW (760)/Bentley/Quattroporte set there came up and asked me about the song and we discussed Radical politics a bit. I'm not selling anything, but I'm reasonable well known and I do think people value my opinion.
I'll do more songs of that ilk in the future. Hey, it's not storming the baracades but I have a little audience in my part of the world and I figure I just may get a point or two across to some people.
Any suggestions for other songs? (And it's just me and my guitar, with limited ability--and it should be a bit subtle--no FUCK THE RICH stuff. :D)

GIVE ME THE REP!!!!!! Pleaaaaaaase!!!!
"So you think that rep is the root of all evil?" said Francisco d'Anconia. "Have you ever asked what is the root of rep? REPUTATION is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are good posts produced and men able to produce them. Reputation is the digital shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Reputation is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your posts by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Reputation is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?
"When you accept reputation in payment for your effort in posting, you do so only on the conviction that you will exchange it for the product of the effort of other's posts. It is not the moochers or the looters who give value to reputation. Not an ocean of tears not all the guns in the world can transform those pieces of digital display in your account into the forum attention you will need to survive tomorrow. Those digital signs, which should have been an objective value, are a token of honor--your claim upon the energy of the men who produce posts. Your rep bar is your statement of hope that somewhere in the world around you there are men who will not default on that moral principle which is the root of reputation, Is this what you consider evil?
"Have you ever looked for the root of production of posts? Take a look at hayenmill's posts and dare tell yourself that it was created by the muscular effort of unthinking brutes. Try to grow a pure logical post without the knowledge left to you by men who had to discover it for the first time. Try to obtain your reputation by means of nothing but physical motions--and you'll learn that man's mind is the root of all the good posts produced and of all the posts "wealth" that has ever existed on earth.
"But you say that reputation is made by the strong at the expense of the weak? What strength do you mean? It is not the strength of guns or muscles. postage wealth is the product of man's capacity to think. Then is reputation made by the man who invents a fallacy-free post at the expense of those who did not invent it? Is reputation made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools? By the able at the expense of the incompetent? By the ambitious at the expense of the lazy? Reputation is made--before it can be looted or mooched--made by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he can't consume more Thanked Posts than he has produced in Thankfull Posts.'
"To trade by means of reputation is the code of the men of good will. Reputation rests on the axiom that every man is the owner of his mind and his effort. Reputation allows no power to prescribe the value of your effort except the voluntary choice of the man who is willing to trade you his effort in return. Reputation permits you to obtain for your good posts and your intellectual labor that which they are worth to the men who thank them, but no more. Reputation permits no deals except those to mutual benefit by the unforced judgment of the traders. Reputation demands of you the recognition that men must work for their own benefit, not for their own injury, for their gain, not their loss--the recognition that they are not beasts of burden, born to carry the weight of your misery--that you must offer them values, not wounds--that the common bond among men is not the exchange of suffering, but the exchange of good posts. Reputation demands that you sell, not your weakness to men's stupidity, but your talent to their reason; it demands that you thank, not the shoddiest they offer, but the best that your reputation can find. And when men live by trade--with reason, not force, as their final arbiter--it is the best post that wins, the best performance, the man of best judgment and highest ability--and the degree of a man's productiveness of posts is the degree of his reward. This is the code of existence whose tool and symbol is reputation. Is this what you consider evil?
"But reputation is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver. It will give you the means for the satisfaction of your desires, but it will not provide you with desires. Reputation is the scourge of the men who attempt to reverse the law of causality--the men who seek to replace the mind by seizing the products of the mind.
"Reputation will not purchase happiness for the man who has no concept of what he wants: reputation will not give him a code of values, if he's evaded the knowledge of what to value, and it will not provide him with a purpose, if he's evaded the choice of what to seek. Reputation will not buy intelligence for the fool, or admiration for the coward, or respect for the incompetent. The man who attempts to thank the brains of his superiors to serve him, with his reputation replacing his judgment, ends up by becoming the victim of his inferiors. The men of intelligence desert him, but the cheats and the frauds come flocking to him, drawn by a law which he has not discovered: that no man may be smaller than his reputation. Is this the reason why you call it evil?
"Only the man who does not need it, is fit to inherit reputation--the man who would make his own reputation bar grow no matter where he started. If an heir is equal to his reputation, it serves him; if not, it destroys him. But you look on and you cry that reputation corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his reputation? Do not envy a worthless heir; his reputation is not yours and you would have done no better with it. Do not think that it should have been distributed among you; loading the world with fifty parasites instead of one, would not bring back the dead virtue which was his reputation bar. Reputation is a living power that dies without its root. Reputation will not serve the mind that cannot match it. Is this the reason why you call it evil?
"REputation is your means of survival. The verdict you pronounce upon the source of your livelihood is the verdict you pronounce upon your life. If the source is corrupt, you have damned your own existence. Did you get your reputation by fraud? By pandering to men's vices or men's stupidity? By catering to fools, in the hope of getting more than your ability to post deserves? By lowering your standards? By doing posts you despise for thankers you scorn? If so, then your reputation will not give you a moment's or a point's worth of joy. Then all the things you thank will become, not a tribute to you, but a reproach; not an achievement, but a reminder of shame. Then you'll scream that reputation is evil. Evil, because it would not pinch-hit for your self-respect? Evil, because it would not let you enjoy your depravity? Is this the root of your hatred of reputation?
"Reputation will always remain an effect and refuse to replace you as the cause. Reputation is the product of virtue, but it will not give you virtue and it will not redeem your vices. Reputation will not give you the unearned, neither in digital posts nor in spirit. Is this the root of your hatred of reputation?
"Or did you say it's the love of reputation that's the root of all evil? To love a thing is to know and love its nature. To love reputation is to know and love the fact that reputation is the creation of the best power within you, and your passkey to trade your effort of posting for the effort of the best among men who post. It's the person who would sell his soul for a lousy post, who is loudest in proclaiming his hatred of reputation--and he has good reason to hate it. The lovers of reputation are willing to work for it. They know they are able to deserve it.
"Let me give you a tip on a clue to men's characters: the man who damns reputation has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it.
"Run for your life from any man who tells you that reputation is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another--their only substitute, if they abandon reputation, is the muzzle of a gun.
"But reputation demands of you the highest virtues, if you wish to make it or to keep it. Men who have no courage, pride or self-esteem, men who have no moral sense of their right to their reputation and are not willing to defend it as they defend their life, men who apologize for being rich in reputation--will not remain rich for long. They are the natural bait for the swarms of looters that stay under rocks for centuries, but come crawling out at the first smell of a man who begs to be forgiven for the guilt of owning reputation. They will hasten to relieve him of the guilt--and of his life, as he deserves.
"Then you will see the rise of the men of the double standard--the men who live by force, yet count on those who live by trading reputation to create the value of their looted reputation--the men who are the hitchhikers of virtue. In a moral forum, these are the criminals, and the statutes are written to protect you against them. But when a forum establishes criminals-by-right and looters-by-law--men who use force to seize the reputation of disarmed victims--then reputation becomes its creators' avenger. Such looters believe it safe to rob defenseless men, once they've passed a law to disarm them. But their loot becomes the magnet for other looters, who get it from them as they got it. Then the race goes, not to the ablest at production of posts, but to those most ruthless at brutality. When force is the standard, the murderer wins over the pickpocket. And then that forum vanishes, in a spread of ruins and slaughter.
"Do you wish to know whether that day is coming? Watch reputation. Reputation is the barometer of a forum's virtue. When you see that thanking is done, not by consent, but by compulsion--when you see that in order to produce posts, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing--when you see that reputation is flowing to those who deal, not in good posts, but in favors--when you see that men get richer by reputation by graft and by pull than by posting, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you--when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice--you may know that your forum is doomed. Reputation is so noble a medium that is does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a forum to survive as half-reputation, half-loot.
"Whenever destroyers appear among men, they start by destroying reputation, for reputation is men's protection and the base of a moral existence. Destroyers seize reps and leave to its owners a counterfeit pile of negative rep. This kills all objective standards and delivers men into the arbitrary power of an arbitrary setter of values. Digital rep was an objective value, an equivalent of reputation produced. Misleading rep is a mortgage on good posts that do not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Misleading rep is a check drawn by legal looters upon an account which is not theirs: upon the virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it bounces, marked, 'Account overdrawn.'
"When you have made evil the means of survival, do not expect men to remain good. Do not expect them to stay moral and lose their lives for the purpose of becoming the fodder of the immoral. Do not expect them to produce good posts, when production is punished and looting rewarded. Do not ask, 'Who is destroying the world? You are.
"You stand in the midst of the greatest achievements of the greatest productive forum and you wonder why it's crumbling around you, while you're damning its life-blood--reputation. You look upon reputation as the savages did before you, and you wonder why the jungle is creeping back to the edge of this forum's digital "walls". Throughout men's history in internet forums, reputation was always seized by looters of one brand or another, whose names changed, but whose method remained the same: to seize good posts by force and to keep the producers bound, demeaned, defamed, deprived of honor. That phrase about the evil of reputation, which you mouth with such righteous recklessness, comes from a time when good posts were produced by the labor of slaves--slaves who repeated the posts once discovered by somebody's mind and left unimproved for years. So long as production of posts was ruled by force, and reputation was obtained by conquest, there was little to conquer, Yet through all the centuries of stagnation and starvation, men exalted the looters, as aristocrats of the sword, as aristocrats of birth, as aristocrats of the bureau, and despised the producers, as slaves, as traders, as shopkeepers--as industrialists of forums.
"To the glory of mankind, there was, for the first and only time in history, a forum of reputation--and I have no higher, more reverent tribute to pay to Opposing Ideologies, for this means: a sub-forum of reason, justice, freedom, production, achievement. For the first time, man's mind and reputation were set free, and there were no rep fortunes-by-conquest, but only rep fortunes-by-work, and instead of swordsmen and slaves, there appeared the real maker of reputation, the greatest typer, the highest type of human being--the self-made man--the RevLeft Opposing Ideologist.
"If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of OIers, I would choose--because it contains all the others--the fact that they were the people who created the phrase 'to make reputation.' No other ideology or forum had ever used these words before; men had always thought of reputation as a static quantity--to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted or obtained as a favor. OIers were the first to understand that reputation has to be created. The words 'to make reputation' hold the essence of human morality.
"Yet these were the words for which OIers were denounced by the rotted cultures of the looters' forums. Now the looters' credo has brought you to regard your proudest achievements as a hallmark of shame, your prosperity as guilt, your greatest men, the OIers, as blackguards, and your magnificent posts as the product muscular labor of typing, the labor of whip-driven slaves, like the pyramids of Egypt. The rotter who simpers that he sees no difference between the power of the rep and the power of the whip, ought to learn the difference on his own hide-- as, I think, he will.
"Until and unless you discover that reputation is the root of all good, you ask for your own destruction. When reputation ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men. Blood, whips and guns--or reputation. Take your choice--there is no other--and your time is running out."

Did anyone read this last part, at all? :

I kind of like Strongbow. Here in sunny Florida we have a pretty large community of British retirees and every supermarket have a good selection of cidars.
Also in Florida (where you can get a tan waking from your car to the supermarket) there is NO ONE WHITER than an Englishman that just flew in for their Holiday. It's amazing to see how white their skin is.

I found her trying to google what I though was Stalin's daughter.
And on the subject of daughters---
I thought this was interesting. I (with other parents that graduated high end colleges) was at an informal info session at my kid's HS for top IB kids (incoming juniors) on how to get into the best colleges next year and how to plan their careers--and the OVERWELMING intrest of these kids these days is to go to Princeton and to go to work for Goldman Sachs. I already knew most of these kids--they're friends of my daughter--and before the Government sued Goldmen they had a diversity of career plans (my daughter an anesthesiologist, for example.) But when they saw how much money Wall Streeters make, they became VERY interested in that career path. ("Daddy, I'm not interested anymore in running your business or becomming a doctor--those guys on Wall Street are making 50 million dollars a year--that's REAL money." There you go.)
The Goldman suit was the best infomercial Wall Street has had in a long time.

E-mail making the rounds:
Goldman Sachs to the United States of America
You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth. Son, we live in a country with an investment gap. And that gap needs to be filled by men with money. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Middle Class Consumer? Goldman Sachs has a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Lehman and you curse derivatives. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what we know: that Lehman’s death, while tragic, probably saved the financial system. And that Goldman’s existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves pension funds. You don’t want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want us to fill that investment gap. You need us to fill that gap.
We use words like credit default swaps, collateralized debt obligation, and securitization? We use these words as the backbone of a life spent investing in something. You use them as a punchline. We have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to a commoner who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very credit we provide, and then questions the manner in which we provide it! We’d rather you just said thank you and paid your taxes on time. Otherwise, we suggest you get an account and start trading. Either way, we don’t give a damn what you think you’re entitled to!
Those brave men and women made the ultimate sacrifice - of living in unthinkable luxury, cut-off for ever from the common man!
I salute those heroic individuals who have made America what it is today! :D

A Somali Pirate press release:
Somali Pirates Say They Are Subsidiary of Goldman Sachs
*** Could Make Prosecution Difficult, Experts Say ***
NORFOLK, VIRGINIA (The Borowitz Report) – Eleven indicted Somali pirates dropped a bombshell in a U.S. court today, revealing that their entire piracy operation is a subsidiary of banking giant Goldman Sachs.
There was an audible gasp in the courtroom when the leader of the pirates announced, “We are doing God’s work. We work for Lloyd Blankfein.”
The pirate, who said he earned a bonus of $48 million in dubloons last year, elaborated on the nature of the Somalis’ work for Goldman, explaining that the pirates forcibly attacked ships that Goldman had already shorted.
“We were functioning as investment bankers, only every day was casual Friday,” the pirate said.
The pirate acknowledged that they merged their operations with Goldman in late 2008 to take advantage of the more relaxed regulations governing bankers as opposed to pirates, “plus to get our share of the bailout money.”
In the aftermath of the shocking revelations, government prosecutors were scrambling to see if they still had a case against the Somali pirates, who would now be treated as bankers in the eyes of the law.
“There are lots of laws that could bring these guys down if they were, in fact, pirates,” one government source said. “But if they’re bankers, our hands are tied.”

Speakin of music---any of you Commies that play guitar listen to this: if you want a GREAT amp I suggest you buy a knock off of the Fender Tweed Deluxe. It is FANTASTIC. You can get one for under a grand.
In my youth M+P got me a Magnatone M15 (for many dollars that they really work hard to earn) and it was OK--it completely missed the point on great tone, though--I gradually moved away from electric and got myself into acustic guitar.
A week ago on a whim I bought a Tweed knock off--and it's FREAKIN' the best amp I have ever heard. 15 amps a bit of head room and then just this beautiful BEAUTRIFUL tube distortion. Think Neil Young's "Alabama."
It sounds really good on a Strat, but it's HEAVEN on a Les Paul.
Here's somebody's Youtube on the subject.
