Yeah! That's right! A sentence of 52 days starts tomorrow afternoon (11.3.2010) In case someone missed it, an anarchist friend of mine persuaded me to make a statement by refusing to serve an illegal regime (white finland) either via armed service or civilian service.
No worries, the sentece is as easy as hell. It's in an open detention center where I get a job and I can just slouch off during the evenings in my personal quarters. It is nothing compared to what conscientious objectors have to face elsewhere. I do not however have anykind of internet connection, and I am therefor off-line for a bit under two months. I have no idea whether I have holidays off or not (most people do).
Until then, cheers!

Oh! I will complete my dream that I've had a few years now. I will glue several pieces of soap on the shower-room floor. :D

Hell yeah conscientious objection, I find that quite admirable. I haven't had to give anything up due to my leftism, I've had it easy.

Your reputation power should now be over 9000:lol:
In all seriousness though, I hope the sentence isn't too bad. I'm lucky to have no legal mandate to serve the U.S.

If you do so, you will have a place to stay at my place, assuming that I have a place at that given time. (I just lived 7 months at my own apartment, I'm living at my parents again right now and after the summer I need an apartment for another year... studies) Honestly, you can quote me on that one.
And to all others. Thanks dudes and dudettes! But I honestly think it's going to be more like a holiday from all that studying... I've seen some... documentaries...
Oh! And imagine the symbolism! I will be set free on may day!

Nice on conscientious objection. That's really cool.
And nice on having a very lenient sentence compared to a lot of other countries.

It is unlikely I will get drafted. While the US is still heavily militarized there is still a lot of hate towards the draft here. They would only use it under extreme circumstances. If they do try to draft me I would love to chill with you in Finland. Sounds like fun to me. :thumbup1:

The judicial paper-war lasted for a year, during which it was hard to get any jobs due to uncertain dates. :(

I did my military service in the finnish armed forces back in 1998. I thought it would be easier -- least trouble -- to just get it done as early as possible. Thus I volunteered at the age of 17 (I would do anything to get a break from school, heh).
I also thought I might learn something useful for life. Unfortunately the amount of valuable information taught there turned out to be pretty close to nil, zero, zip -- so in that aspect I was rather disappointed..
In retrospect I can say that those were 6 months of my life totally wasted for nothing. I turned 18 not in a comfy pub but in a tent in the snowclad woods.
I probably wouldn't do it again, and I'm glad they don't call on me to do the kertausharjoitukset as I live in Sweden.

I'm going now! I'll take the last meal and then I'm off. Before I go however I'd like to share a nice incident regarding this matter.
Many finnish officials demand that you fill out your "position in a wartime organization" slot on numerous official papers. When I was asked my position for my student allowance I replied: "beaches of Brazil". Luckily the official had a sense of humour and translated the answer for the computer.

No! And they let half the prison out the day after. I'm getting suspicious...
Did the soap stay glued to the floor?
Those cursed ingrates had liquid soap!

I worked, watched TV, worked some more and then I watched alot of TV... prisons...
What I regret is that I missed the biggest wave of worker strikes since the 50's! :(

Boring. Working, then watching TV, then some more work and alot of TV.
But really, feelings were quite mixed. At the jail itself people were generally reasonable and polite. Nothing there. But as it happens, I was assigned to the same work group with a bunch of most vile and villainous cutthroat brawling murderers I have ever seen. I didn't feel as much threatened by this, as I felt pissed off. With that group there were only three allowed topics.
-How manly you have been
-How manly you are
-How manly you will be
Anything slightly outside these topics were answered with outright hostility. Luckily those guys were... how would I say... "Intellectually challenged". They constantly fantasized about violence, and were hellbent on converting me to christianity (with the daftest of arguments. American fundies would blush before such nonsense) Why is it that the most violent of idiots were always the most religious ones. Notice the lack of question mark at the end of last sentence.
Well, still the stereotype of violent murderers is just that: a stereotype. Don't judge inmates.

I did not actually tell, but they made conclusions from my Lenin pins and books by Marx and Lenin. They tried debating me at first, but admitted their utter humiliating defeat after few sessions. Dind't stop them from being racist assholes though.
Speaking of books, prison was an extreme cultural experience. During 52 days I read the following books completely:
-Digital frotress by Dan Brown
-Murder in Cormyr by Chet Williamson
-The ghost king by R.A. Salvatore
-Dracula by Bram Stoker
-Imperialism, highest stage of capitalism by Lenin
-A collection of articles and books on sectarianism and dogmatism by Lenin
And I also started a bit on Marx's capital.

I was being sarcastic, minimum security usually isn't so bad, I used to live a couple blocks from the Washington State penitentiary, it goes down on lock down a lot, but movies still over do it. I can imagine it was a pretty fucking boring 2 months though, at least it gave you some time to get some readings in

If they do try to draft me I would love to chill with you in Finland. Sounds like fun to me.The working class would probably have to suffer some major defeats for the US government to get away with reinstating the draft. If that does happen (hopefully it won't), it won't happen anytime soon at the very least.
