Comrades, as I was Googling various things such as socialism I happened to stumble upon this oasis of the left. I am in the Navy, but about to get out in a few months. I have been surrounded by a majority of right wing nuts for the last four years, so I always appreciate the chance to talk to people of like mind as myself. Raised in a very religious and politically conservative home, I left all of that behind long ago and set out to find out what I personally thought about the world.
I am a member of the DSA, that is the Democratic Socialists of America, though I tend to lean a little farther left than they do :)
I am open minded about many things, but stand firm on certain ideas. The idea that socialism will bring a world of equality and peace. The idea that the social contract is important. The idea that every human being has the right to live and prosper. The idea that humanity, and only humanity can construct a better world. I look forward to learning with everyone here.
See you around the forum.

Why?
Well That is an easy question to answer. In the US, if you do four years of military service they pay 100% of your college after you get out. I chose the Navy because I would not have to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, or kill any one. To this day I have never killed anyone, or been in combat of any kind. My reasons thus were pragmatic, not patriotic. I am stationed in Japan, learned to speak Japanese, and will get out in a couple short months with 4 free years of college to look forward to. Say what you want, but it was a means to an end.

Thanks. If we had a system of providing education for the people, we wouldn't have to resort to joining the military to get an education. It is really just another way of perpetuating their military industrial complex.
I intend to use my free education (well, if you consider sacrificing 4 years of my life free, lol) to change that system to one that makes a bit more sense.
Maybe you could hijack a destroyer for the revolution? :)
And start shelling the shit out of DC?

That would make for a wicked-ass movie.
Unless it's been done already. I wouldn't know. I'd watch it, though.

I think I did see that in a movie once...Can't remember what it was though. Anyway, that would be impossible to accomplish. Besides, I am an almost pacifist anyway. ( Only for use of force when no other options available)

Hey, I like fireworks as much as the next guy, sure. While we're at it, we can change that antiquated document called the constitution, so that it really represents equality among the people.

Or we could use it to wipe our asses with - your choice.

Hmmm. Nah, we'd keep it as a reminder that people can choose to change their government if they wish. And if they have not been brainwashed into thinking their constitution is the infallible word of Jeebus.
