Was it an agent connected to the US government, or was it just a lone gunman? Also, same thing for Malcom X. Thanks.

Supposedly, this is the only conspiracy that Chomsky believes in and ironically its the one that is mentioned least in the media. There was a case brought about by MLKs family that pretty much exonerated the killer but didn't absolve him of the murder. The family has been claiming the killer's innocence since.

I dont know much about the MLK murder.

As for Malcolm X...
COINTELPRO had alot to do with the murder.
COINTELPRO for those that dont know, I assume most here do, was a program by the FBI to infiltrate and disrupt all organisations oppossed to the US government (mostly left, only about 15% of their time was used on right-wing extremists) and it's system.
This was also done by creating conflict with these groups, the way they split up the Black Panther Party is a good example.

The Nation of Islam was such a group that COINTELPRO targeted, John Ali was an FBI agent who became national secretary in the NOI.
Malcolm considered Ali his archenemy in the NOI.

As the tensions sharpened after Malcolm left the NOI (for being silenced after his remarks after the JFK assassination) and criticised Elijah Muhammed for having sex with many teen girls Muhammed had as secretaries.
The NOI considered Malcolm a traitor and members like Farrakhan said Malcolm deserved to be killed.
John Ali was said to have a big role in sharpening these tensions.

Malcolm recieved lots of death threats and got hardly any security from the government.

John Ali met with Talmadge Hayer, one of the men convicted with the murder of Malcolm X, one day before the murder took place.

Benjamin Thomas, Leon Davis, Wilbur McKinley, William Bradley, and Talmadge Hayer killed Malcolm X. Only one of them ever spent a day in jail for his murder. I believe it was at the behest of Elijah who created this culture of hate around Malcolm after he left the Nation. While Cointelpro had an effect on their relationship and was a factor in Malcolm leaving, ultimately the government didn't kill Malcolm, his own people killed him.
