How do you argue against those who believe that a free, equal, stateless society is an impossible goal?
I don't get critisised by many nazis for my beliefs but instead my friends take a 'good luck with that, it will never work in the real world' aproach to communism.
They see the free, equal society as an impossibly good thing but they do not belive it can be achieved.
And I can't say look at China or USSR as they have said before, correctly, that all previous atempts have either failed, mutated to something very different, or didn't make it past their first few years.

Tell them that socialist revolutions have already happened before, and explain them how it's the workers who do them (meaning it's the majority), so it isn't that far off.
Anyone can look at communism and say, whoa, that's impossible to get.
But when you get to socialism, communism doesn't look impossible at all, as long as it stays true to it's ideals.
And if socialism isn't that far fetched, seeing as revolutions have happened before, communism isn't so far fetched at all.
The thing is not to look at communism (the ''perfect society'') just by itself, but as the end of a whole process of hard work.
Once you look at communism as the final product of a huge thing, than it doesn't seem impossible.
Now you just have to explain that to them :)

well, ask them why they think it's utopian. most of my friends, after being asked that same question, will just shrug. they only think its utopian because thats what they've been told
tell them it's been done before successfully, i.e. Paris Commune, anarcho-syndicalist Catalonia, etc.

Communism is not utopian because it will not be a perfect society, there will still be disease and illness, there will still be crime, there will still be naturual disasters.
Also, remember that all revolutionaries approach society from the conflict theory persepective (this is true if you're marxist or not) and that society advances through struggle, marx said is was class struggle, but there will still be forces struggling even after we achieve communism. We just can't concieve of what those forces will be, though I think its fair to say that the environment and our relationship with it will cause a lot of problems in the future and will be a massive task for communist society to deal with.
