The streets are full of drunken boys with flags and hockey sticks. I walked to my mom's place from the university, it's about a 20 minute walk, I almost got in four separate fist fights for not cheering. A stranger called me a "fucking nazi".
I'm not looking forward to the 9 hours of bus ride back to Montreal, but I'm pretty excited to be there.

I know it's pretty bad out there, but almost getting into fights for not cheering? You sure you weren't cheering for the wrong team?
Some girls I barely know who painted their faces red insisted that I go watch the game with them...They kept bugging me until one of them eventually popped the question: "Do I look fat?"
As usual, I had to be a smart-mouth. And that ended my closest encounter with this stupid winter Olympics.

Sooooo lucky there's never been Olympics in NZ, it's a shitty enough country as it is.

I hear you. I live in the goddamned host city so it's pretty bad here too. It's sort of sickening to see so many red-and-white painted people and Canadian flags everywhere, with those goddamned red mittens and Olympic branded clothing.
I actually got asked where my Olympic spirit was because I wasn't wearing any of that shit. What the fuck? Since when does someone need to spend $50 on a sweater to prove something?

Well, they definitely do "Own the Podium". The expenses: lots of money, limiting training for foreign players, and one dead Georgian (whose name will be forgotten in a few years, anyway). Fuck the Olympics.
The jingoist bullshit isn't limited to host nations, though. In the Netherlands, everyone thinks that the world is interested in Dutch ice skaters. So they were rather disappointed when gold medal-winning skater Sven Kramer was interviewed by NBC: http://biertijd.com/mediaplayer/?itemid=18732 (after about 25 secs). What an arrogant prick! In another Olympic race, he was disqualified after his coach misdirected him. One of the papers claimed that this caused "the whole nation to mourn", but in reality, only idiots who like ice skating mourned.

I'm not sure why the Canadians were so overjoyed about beating the US (where only like 4 states play hockey) in their national sport.

Let's see, that would be Alaska, Maine, Minnesota, and who else?

There are actually fewer Canadian teams, btw

RLL is right that there is a fair amount of hockey in the northern states, but the kids are excited because they're alcoholic jingoists, and Canadian nationalism is all about not being American, so this is like the greatest thing that has ever happened to a lot of them.

Nothing has ever fueled as useless and poorly reasoned nationalism as international sports.

Actually Minnesota, Michigan, New York and massachusetts.
How could you forget about Michigan? Ever heard of Mike Modano, Pat Lafontaine or Ryan Miller even?

Yes, but the vast majority of the players in the NHL are from Canada. They moved a bunch of Canadian teams to the US back in the 90s when the US dollar was much stronger than the Canadian dollar. However now places like Phoenix, Nashville and Atlanta are lucky if they can sell half the tickets for a given game. Canada draws larger crowds for junior hockey games than many US based NHL teams do.

It's odd how sports can make someone an extreme nationalist. People get so mad when a team beats 'their country.'

I'm aware that this view doesn't necessarily have a basis in logic, but I tend to hate nationalists from certain countries more than others; a view that allows me to choose who to support in various world cup games (though ideally every game would be a draw and all the nationalists would go home disheartened ;))
The most difficult game for me in this respect is England vs USA. On one hand I live in England so have first-hand encounters with the sort of ignorant racist scum that permeate every level of society here, so I don't want their nationalists to get enjoyment by winning.
On the other hand, it's the USA.... and nobody wants to see them win at football, right? It's just wrong on so many levels.

I guess by 'soccer' you mean football?
The US actually have a fairly decent team at the moment, they did pretty well in the Confederations Cup last year, they were knocked out in the Semis by Brazil I think, though even in that game they were 1-0 up at half time.
If Donovan and Dempsey are on form, they might do ok in the world cup, given that (apart from England) they have a relatively easy group.

Why does England always lose in World Cup? They have quite a few "celebrity players", if I recall correctly. Are they no good or is it just bad luck?
I'm not a "football" fan (merely saying it invokes images of oversized Americans smashing into eachother for no apparent reason), but you won't believe how crazed my Chinese compatriots are about this game, in which China is really good at failing.

They beat #1 ranked Spain over the summer.

Its like Finland vs Sweden. The Finns doesn't care if they get beaten up by Uganda in hockey, as long as they're beating the the Swedes.

Because the national coach used to suck. Now, they have Cappelo, a master.
That victory against Spain doesn't count, try to play them in games that matter. Exemple: Portugal against China last night, 2-0 in a game without soul, so boring, the portuguese fans were supporting the chinese and booing every time a portuguese player touched the ball. But if the qualification for the World Cup was at stake (like it happened with Bosnia), China would be slaughtered.

Is it wrong to cheer on your local school's football team, or does that constitute vulgar 'localism'? It's not like sports hurt anyone. Most of the time. Sometimes...
Alma mater, adieu.
