i've read a lot about it in books about it and it's a pretty frequent in movies too so i'm wondering how widespread it is in reality.

any sources would do fine.

About 30+ million people are reliant on the government to get food in the USA.

I live in a tin can (trailer/mobile homes). Most of the other 500+ people in my neighborhood do too. In the area I live there is about 3 trailer/mobile home parks to every 'house' neighborhood. I imagine it is similar in other areas of the country as well, but that's just speculation on my part.

I don't think many people do at all. The percentage has to be small, maybe 5-7%.

Their are trailer parks in or near most towns, but the percentage of people that live in them isn't that high. Although with the economy the way it is that number might increase.
